With the release of Enemy of Justice, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game now has over 2000 unique tournament legal cards available. 2008 to be exact. (Source: RONINâ„¢)

This is quite the milestone, and with the danger of sounding like a broken record ... how many of these 2000+ cards are we really using? 500? 400? less?

I just took a look through my three constructed decks here, and of 126 possible unique cards I could be using (40 + 2 fusion, 42, 42) even I, a self-proclaimed lover of originality come up with a grand total of 63 unique cards across all decks. Exactly 50% of what I *could* have attained (kinda cool how that worked out, actually):

30 unique monster cards
21 unique spell cards
12 unqiue trap cards

In my defense, I think that even with 3 very distinct deck types that don't have that much in common, I've done fairly well here. I have some really unusual cards here, and put them all to good use: Gaia Soul, Interdimensional Matter Transporter, Double Spell, Nightmare Wheel, The Shallow Grave, and the list goes on. Of course, you have a ton of cards played in 2x and 3x in each deck, which is why I think that 50% is a GOOD number here.

OK, so maybe 45-50% of the entire card pool consists of completely worthless or outdated cards now. I'd like to think that's shooting it a little high, but still ... that leaves 1000 or more unique, somewhat useful cards at our disposal. And I used around 6% of them. Man, that's scary.

I'd venture to bet that 50% uniqueness is actually a higher number than most players generally attain with 3 or more decks they would be consider "ready" for an advanced format tournament. So my challenge for all of you is ... prove me wrong.

Tell me about how well you use this vast card pool of ours and put my statistics to shame! Tell me what you think about my claim that there are more than 1000 "somewhat useful" cards out there to use right now. Tell me where to put my ... no wait, on second thought don't do that. LOL!

Note: This isn't to garner deck lists .. use the proper forum, please. Discussion about the card pool and how well we use/don't use it is what I'm looking for.

Oh, and no UDE/Konami bashing allowed in here. That's not the point at all.

I really only use a selective list of cards. Even with the TCG being over 2000+ cards, I still feel there is not enough cards for me out of them in order to get the Deck I want to make and do what I want it to do.

i dont know how original my decks are but i try to keep completely themed at all times and thus pass up certain possibly better cards for ones that fit my themes. Personally I think properly built theme decks can beat anything and i wanna prove it. Id like to think im at least as unique as yourself DJP. As for using a load of unused cards....... Maybe if my cardpool was as extensive as your own i might have a chance at doing it right but as it stands....... Gimme your cards??? :)

Out of 4 decks, the only cards that I know right now span across all 4 are Graceful Charity
Snatch Steal
MST

In 3 decks I have
Giant Trunade
Call of the Haunted
Premature Burial
Solemn Judgment
Sakuretsu Armor.

In 2 of the decks I have
Magical Cylinders
Compulsory Evac Device
Jar of Greed
Card Destruction
Magician of Faith
Nobleman of Crossout
Swords of Revealing Light
Heavy Storm.

I didn't see any other similarities between my decks.

even then some of the choice I repeat, like Jar of Greed or Comp Evac Device, I dont see frequently enough to be considered as something widespread across many duelists.

Ill let someone else figure out the ratios. I stink at math. All I know is I have 4 decks. 1 is 40 cards, 1 is 43 cards, two of them are 41. The two that are 41 are heading east towards Alberquerque at 50 mph. The one with 43 cards is headed west at 20 mph, and the last one is headed south from the losses. Question is: what color are my socks?

Hey ... that's not fair :D I certainly didn't mean to come off as "nya nya look how many cards I have" at all. I hope the smiley means you're not insulted.

But along the same lines, how many cards you have doesn't matter THAT much. Yeah, you do need to HAVE them in order to use them, but here's what I mean. I went through and took a look at what I'm actually using in my decks. A huge portion of all my in-use cards are commons, and many are from Structure Decks!

I pulled out 10 "money" cards that I'm using. Honestly, just about everything else is el-cheapos, or could just as easily be (i.e., I'm not counting that I've used a Super Rare D.D. Warrior Lady, since I could be using a common one from SD5 instead):

- 1 DR2 Dark Magician of Chaos
- 1 DB2 Injection Fairy Lily
- 1 DB2 Airknight Parshath
- 2 IOC Smashing Ground
- 1 MRD Mirror Force
- 1 CRV Cyber End Dragon
- 1 CRV Cyber Twin Dragon
- 2 SOD Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6

That's only 10 out of 126 cards that might be worth more than a couple bucks, or remotely hard to get. Even Horus LV6 is questionable as "money" nowadays :D

I guess my point is just to illustrate that I didn't mean to imply that having lots of cards directly corrolated to using lots of different ones. I do see your point, though, and really hope I didn't come off as an arrogant fool in the initial post.

Actually DJP i was feeling sorry for myself cos of my pitiful card collection.

If you've got at least 40, you're doing fine, right? It's just a game :D I've seen people do some amazing things with nothing but a structure deck and a couple packs of cards.

It's not what you have, it's how you use it my friend!

yeah but its nice to have what ya need too. Can you believe i only own one lava golem for my burn deck? its disgusting that i only have 1. At least i shoved in 2 final countdown and pyro clock of destiny to make things more interesting.

I have noticed I tend towards many of the same spell and trap staples(Snatch, MST, HS, Dust Tornado, SST8 etc..) and branch off from there. I usually get my ideas from the monsters so I probably don't go as far afield as I should for the back row.

Starting with the monsters is generally how its done, since attackers are the main force that people win by. Its only when you start focusing on unique effects, like Spatial Collapse, Magical Explosion, Card of Sanctity, ect. that your monsters become the supplement.
