A little and rapid question: Ryu Kokki's effect

Based on Dark Ruler Ha Des' ruling I've alwasy assumed it was not continuous, but Yu-Gi-Oh! effects are hard to pin down sometimes based ont the rulings alone.

Monster effects that activate after damage calculation will be negated if your Fiend-Type monster destroys the opposing Effect Monster. Examples include "D.D. Warrior Lady", "Thousand Needles", "Slate Warrior", "Ryu Kokki", and "Wall of Illusion".

It suggests that Ryu Kokki "activates" after damage calculation, but then that could simply be the lingering effect of a continuous effect.

"Lingering effect of a continous effect" lol, wow there are new terms popping out everywhere this days xD...

Anyways im not sure if it could be considered a trigger effect, becuase I believe that Ryu Kokki, is "always" checkin the type of monster he is involved in battle with.

Granted, it's not an 'official' source, but...from the Battle Phase chart...

  1. Sub-step 6: Send to the Graveyard.
Well, crud...lol. "Spear Dragon"'s effect is a continuous effect and it's listed here as 'activating' at the end of the Damage Step....go figure!...lol.

Slither may indeed be correct....

[Re: Legendary Jujitsu Master] If "Legendary Jujitsu Master" is changed to a Fiend-Type or a Zombie-Type by "DNA Surgery" and is attacked by "Getsu Fuhma", "Getsu Fuhma"'s effect is Step 1 of a chain because the turn player is Step 1, and "Legendary Jujitsu Master" is Step 2."Legendary Jujitsu Master" resolves first and "Getsu Fuhma" is sent back to the top of the Deck, then "Getsu Fuhma"'s effect resolves and "Legendary Jujitsu Master" is destroyed.
That ruling clearly indicates that these are Triggers and do indeed activate and create Chain Links.

As far as Spear Dragon, i think it was an error on Mr. Tewert's part. I can't say for certain, i've always equated it to GAF, which is a non-chainable effect.

I believe there is a lot of inconsistency as far as ruling which monitor certain "specifics" in the game, this particular cases such as expecting a specific type of monster.

We could easily compare Ryu Kokki to Ultimate Baseball Kid, Command Knight etc., which are always looking for an specific type of monster to be up on the field for some "particular" purpose, why should Ryu Kokki be any different?

I think the confusion lies in the fact that people are looking at the wrong criteria. It's not about the "Type" of monster, but "why" the effect occurs. Unfortunately the "if" wording in the text makes it seem like it's condition, when it's more of a Conditional Trigger.

You could have easily written the effect as:

"When this monster battles with a Warrior or Spellcaster-Type monster, destroy that monster at the end of the Damage Step."

...and it would be exactly like any normal Trigger, and not change the effect at all.

Ryu Kokki requires an event to occur... battle... the Type of monster is simply an additional condition required for activation. This would indicate a Triggered Effect.

Ultimate Baseball Kid and Command Knight conversely, do not require an event to occur, but are merly continously looking for existance... indicating a pure Continuous Effect.
