Abyss Soldier

Abyss Soldier #CMC-EN001

Card # CMC-EN001
Card Name: Abyss Soldier
Monster Type: Aqua
Attribute: WATER
Level: 4
Attack: 1800
Defense: 1300

Effect:

Discard 1 WATER monster from your hand to the Graveyard. Return 1 card on the field to the owner's hand. You can only use this effect once per turn, during your Main Phase.

Folks, if you're playing a Water deck this card simply rocks!

With A Legendary Ocean it's a 2000 atk beat stick. Obviously though, there are many 1800 or higher atk Water monsters that you can get out on the field easily. That's not Abyss Soldier's fame.

Return 1 Card....now keep it mind it doesn't specify spell, trap, or face up or down monster....nor does it specify on your opponent's side of the field. Those non-specifics make it HIGHLY versitile!

Perhaps the most overlooked possiblities with Abyss Soldier's effect is the option to send your own cards back to your hand.

Send your Premature Burial back to your hand and use it again.

Send your Swords of Revealing Light back to your hand after the second turn to be used again.

If you're playing a bind deck send Gravity Bind back to your hand to attack with your big boys and then set it again.

I'm sure you're getting the picture and can come up with many more possibilities along these lines.

So you say, "Yeah, but I have to discard!"
Right, let's look at those options as well. Don't forget that some of the most powerful atk Water monsters are normal monsters....which leads us to that seldom used Soul Resurection. Not only can you summon your L5 monsters with no tributes with Legendary Ocean but you can bring them back into play with Soul Resurection.

Abyss Soldier is a good card to be playing with Forced Requisition. You're likely already using Tribe Infecting Virus. This deck is a solid one to use Forced Requisition in.

Lastly consider that if you're playing a Water deck you'll likely be playing with lots of normal monsters. Here's where Heart of the Underdog shines, in an Water deck....which feeds your hand for Abyss Soldier's effect, which feeds Forced Requisition's effect.

Of course you can always use Abyss Soldier's effect for it for the standard applications...

Don't like BLS? Send him away.

Jinzo bothering you? Be gone!

You say you don't like that Wave Motion Cannon sitting there with 3 counters? Buh bye!

Abyss Soldier has a great many possibilites and is a hugely vesitile card. Give a Water deck a go with it.

Ouch. This card is brutal with all the combos you mentioned with it. How can you not use it a Water deck? The card's so versatile its not even funny. Its a walking spiritualism that can send back a Monster, Trap OR Spell.

It isn't restricted in any way. You can use 3 copies. The hard part of course is getting your hands on them since they come from a Game. Then again, not many folks are playing Water decks so you might have a chance at it. If you're like me though you're not all that concerned about the game it comes in, just the card :)

You haven't even mentioned the most obvious abuse.

Two Words: Sinister Serpent.

<laffin> You're right, I got so wrapped up in my review and ideas I overlooked the obvious! Hmmm....sounds like a judging mistake doesn't it?

Yeah, sinister works too. Its just that with it being banned an all, we tend to forget there's still a traditional format.

Sinister Serpent is not a banned card, it is, however, restricted to one.

Seeing as I run a Water Bounce deck, I had to put in my two cents and Abyss Soldier is definitely staple in a water deck, no question. His effect is simply amazing, even without Sinister and so versatile...Words cannot express the love that I have for this card. I only run two b/c three can become quite expensive discard-wise, even with Sinister...Seeing as its an extremely hard to get promo it would be nice if it was a 1900 attker but then ppl would use it elsewhere even if just for Sinister. I recommend eBay if you're trying to get it, however keep in mind you'll probably be paying for all three of the promos at once since everyone wants Abyss Soldier and not Teva or Inferno Hammer.

I dont know what to say that hasn't been said already so I'll just say Abyss Soldier gets a 4.5 out of 5 in a Water Deck, 5/5 Water-Bounce (obviously), and 1/5 elsewhere.

that it will be is what your thinking archfiend.

itll be good if it does, too many discard cards in people deck that makes sinister serpent a discard me please card.

<chuckle> Perhaps, it's funny for me to hear that though because people thought me crazy when I began using it as soon as it came out. Most didn't see it's value and said it's a worthless card!

That's the life story of many cards. At first they're considered useless and the duelist who use them are ridiculed. That is of course until they see these duelist prove just how powerful they really are. Then they start adoring the card (and the duelist as well, if he's/she's lucky) and giving thanks for its existence.

I'm currently trying to get a third one...They're very expensive, even on eBay. I've found even without sinister the effect is worth it, as long as you're packing at least two Salvages.

Water Staple!

Sometimes I get too caught up in ATK and DEF stats. I almost didn't put in Mobius the Frost Monarch for Amphibian Beast, because of the DEF difference. What a mistake that would have been.

Abyss Soldier replaced the Sea Serpent Warrior of Darkness in my deck. And I gotta say a -200 in DEF is definately worth the effect.

Abyss destablizes the field to a great extent, I got beat down by a water deck cause I didnt side against the soldier, definitely a solid card. Only problem is if the other player baits some card for you, then the hand disadvantage can seriously hurt

also, don't forget that you can dump mother grizzlies and the such to ramove for water monsters, heck this card rox in a plant deck(here's the situational uber-combo):

Lord Poison on the field
Summon Abyss Soldier in ATK
use his effect, drop Fairy King Truesdale to return a card, suicide lord poison to special summon truesdale in def., DNA Surgery(for kicks) call plant, 2300 ATK Abyss Soldier with 1800 DEF as well

i ran a plant deck for fun, it was awesome with last will,(yes, it played firegrass, lol)
