i was dueling a friend of mine and in two chances he says i was wrong and i know NOTHING can be activated when ancient gear golem attacks but i just need some clarification:

1. if i attack can he activate cards like Threatening_Roar or rush recklessly when i say that my ancient gear golem attacks one of his cards?

2. Also can he activate confusion chaff if i attack directly twice. He claims he activated it during my second monster's battle step therefore satisfying the ".... If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any spell or trap cards until the end of the Damage Step" rule.

----Thanks

A battle starts when you say "I'll attack X with Y". "Ancient Gear Golem" forbids any Spell/Trap Cards from being activated after you speak that phrase, until after the End Step of the battle. According to this:

1. No. However, it is possible to activate those cards before you declare an attack, and they'll work properly. That's because they can be activated at any time, not specifically in response to an attack.

2. No. Your friend is highly confused; the Battle Step comes before the Damage Step (how can you do damage if you haven't battled?).

See this page for all kinds of information about the Battle Phase, and what you can/can't do.

Okay, let's try this again...I just made this loooong post and *boop* it disappeared!! Man that's frustrating!! This one is made shorter by quoting Maruno (sorry, I promise I'm not picking on you).

A couple of corrections here.

First:
"Ancient Gear Golem" forbids any Spell/Trap Cards from being activated after you speak that phrase, until after the End Step of the battle. According to this:
Actually, with "Ancient Gear Golemn/Beast/Engine" Spell/Trap cards can be activated DURING the End Step of the Battle Phase. Therefore cards like "Crystal Pair", "Destiny/Hero Signal" or "Time Machine" can be activated. This was a big issue with "Ancient Gear Engineer". When its effect activates at the end of the Damage Step you can actually chain the targeted card (if its timing is correct) to that effect because the effct that prohibits activating Spell/Trap cards only lasts until the time frame known as the "End Step" (or "end of the Damage Step"). Within that time frame, multiple chains can go off.

Second:
"Ancient Gear Golem" forbids any Spell/Trap Cards from being activated after you speak that phrase, until after the End Step of the battle. According to this:
I know that Maruno knows this full well, so this isn't for him, but the OP. Maruno was just easier to quote (I'm just clarifying terminolgy, because we have folks that take things very literally and might try something funny).

I don't want anyone taking what Maruno said here and thinking that they can just jump from summoning a monster to real-quick-like say "I attack! Hah, now you can't do anything." That is not what Maruno means by "...after you speak that phrase" (check out his posts). He knows that even once you enter the Battle Phase there is a "Start Step" in which either player (TP first) has the opportunity to activate Spell Speed 2+ effects. "Threatening Roar" must be activated no later than this time to prevent an attack. If both pass on activating SS2 cards the Turn Player can then say "I attack with...". Then, even without an "Ancient Gear" type monster, it is too late to Activate "Threatening Roar" to stop the attack. It will stop any other attack, but not the declared one. http://www.cogonline.net/forums//threads/48290&highlight=threatening+roar

That is what Maruno meant by his statement.

Hope that clarifies. Any questions, I will be back tomorrow.
