Archfiend Week! Axe of Despair SRL-EN002

What a better way to welcome in the holiday season than by featuring some of the most  monsters in the game! Say hello to the Archfiends!

We're going to start off with one that still sees play from time to time, "Axe of Despair". And yes, "Axe of Despair" is indeed categorized as an "Archfiend". It has 1 simple, straight-forward effect: raise the ATK of 1 monster by 1000. This alone makes it one of the strongest Equip Spell cards in the game (trailing under most circumstances "United We Stand" and "Mage Power"). Also, it has 1 simple, lesser used effect: when it is sent from the Field to the Graveyard, you can offer 1 monster as a Tribute to return "Axe of Despair" to the top of your deck. Kinda useful if you have Scapegoats on the field and you really really want to boost up the ATK of something else. However, most people would not want to give up 1 monster on the field AND delay drawing something new only to get "Axe of Despair" back.

Don't get me wrong, this card works very well with cards like "Mataza the Zapper" and "Hayabusa Knight", where suddenly these weak 2-attack monsters become powerhouses, as well as strengthening most anything in the game. Thanks to both the Yugi:Evolution Starter Deck and "Dark Beginnings 1", it's become much easier for players to get their hands on "Axe of Despair". Give this "Archfiend" a whirl and see just powerful this Demonic Axe can be.

Axe of Despair is highly underrated, if you ask me 8^D

Let me emphasize densetsu_x's last paragraph there. How many of your monsters could benefit from a 1000 ATK increase. ALL OF THEM! (unless they're trying to avoid Messenger of Peace or something 8^D)

That 1800 4 star becomes a 2800 beat stick in no time! Those special cards that you get to use their effect once and then they are toast become recursive since an extra 1000 ATK gives them extra protection. My favorite is with Wall of Illusion. It becomes a 2000 attacker that any monster that wants to take it out is going back to the hand unless they have effect negation in play. You can make your defensive monsters more offensive with this lovely little card.

I'd recommend at least 1 in every deck. Axe of Despair is sort of how Bait Doll used to be: It doesn't seem potent until you decided to run 1 in your deck and notice how many times it saves you from a nasty situation.

Enjoy!

Equips (OK, NOT speaking of a Snatch Steal) can be a VERY BAD topdeck...
if you're in a sticky situation and need a very useful card, an Axe won't be what you'd like to see... :)

OK, the MST limit is one point PRO Equips, but still it's difficult to keep an Equip Spell in your deck, there are a lot of useful cards which could help you almost everytime...

I remember when I used to run this card...ahh it was so very effective. A 1000ATK boost is exactly what a monster needs. Especially when this card is COMMON.

yea a decent card, its great when you combine it with 3 falling downs.

axe your monster, opponent has 3 monster, you get to controll all 3 of them.

now that is neat a 1000+ bonus monster plus 3 of your opponents monsters.

haha, thats the best thing in the world.

I'm not gonna lie, Axe of despair is a great card, it's a staple for beatdowns and works well in al l ecks, but I dunno, something puts me off it! With meta people are playing less to have big strong monsters and are using techniques in order to strip the oppenant of what they have then attack, wether in small doses are in big finish, I think the days big bad monsters i sreaching a more advanced strategic style these days.

actually with the release of deck destruction virus of magic, beatdown decks get a major bost from killing all them small 1500 or less monsters.

all you do is sac a giant orc. and boom you clear your opponent from 1500 monsters.

then what you do, is beat your opponent senceless.

Definitely one of the best power-ups. Its great an archfiend deck. Have Pandemonium on the field. Yes, I realize that tributing archfiends will not activiate Pandemonium but odds are your other fiends that do get destroyed will cause you to shuffle your deck so it goes back to the deck but you still get a chance of drawing something else if you play it right.

The artwork is... interesting. Anyone see that the red line didn't get changed so that the face outline of the original artwork is still there?

what about premature burial? its an equip.

You don't want that in your opening hand either. Not unless you about to use Painful choice. Otherwise what good is at the beginning? You have no monsters in the graveyard... yet.

I always use this great equip card when playing against my friends dragon deck...I insult his BEWD's greatly, namely:

Friend: Finally gets BEWD on the field
Me: Summon Maha Vailo, equip with AoD
Me: Attack and insult him with 50 LP damage...heheh

Even better if I manage to draw 2 of them (what's that? Maha Vailo's attack is now 4550? more powerful than a BEUD? so sorry :D )

Ouch, that had to hurt. Axe of despair gives the guy a 1500 atk boost. Just enough to take down a Blues eyes. Maha is great which is why they added that 50 to his Atk. They don't want you to have the ability to special summon him with Shinning Angels.
