Battle-Scarred and Mask of the Accursed

I was recently playing my archfiend deck and ran into this strange scenario:

I had a face-up Archfiend Soldier on my side of the field; my opponent activated Mask of the Accursed on the monster; I had a set Battle-Scarred so I activated it on my Archfiend Soldier.

The way I understand this, both players take the 500 life point damage each stand by phase; I do understand the intent of the card was to activate it for the Archfiends that have a cost to be on the field but what is the proper ruling?

No. Battle-Scarred only applies to the Archfiend's cost to keep it on the field.

You can still target your Archfiend Soldier, but it will do nothing:

"¢ You can select an Archfiend that doesn't require you to pay Life Points as a target for "Battle-Scarred" (such as "Summoned Skull", "Archfiend Soldier", or "Fiend Skull Dragon").

Also, Battle-Scarred affects LP payments. Mask of the Accursed is damage.
