Hello everyone. Digital Jedi has asked me to do a card of the week here at City of Gamers. They really want to rile up some VS support on this site so let's really get it going. It begins now.
Type: Character
Team: Secret Society
Rarity: Rare
Trait:
Illustrator: Stuart Sayger
Cost: 1
ATK: 1
DEF: 1
Card Text:
At the start of your recruit step, if Mr. Mxyzptlk is in your KO'd pile, you may put him into your hand. If you do, remove all other cards in your KO'd pile named Mr. Mxyzptlk from the game.
"Nice try, Aquaman, but you're made of sand!"
In every set of this game that comes out, there are cards that are playable within certain teams, cards that are playable in any deck, and cards that aren't really so good in much at all. Occasionally there are cards like our preview. Mr. Mxyzptlk, while having the hardest name in the comic book universe to pronounce, is one of the best cards ever printed. It is one of the few cards that can and probably should find its way into almost every deck - at least as a single slot of tech.
First off, why so good? Oddly enough, this characters represents one of a newer breed of character that really doesn't ever want to be recruited. He has no special abilities on the field that come close to helping you out. However, everyone knows that hand advantage is great strategy in any card game. If I have more cards than my opponent, logic says I have more options. And this is exactly what our impish friend provides. His ability to come back to your hand makes him the obvious target for discard effects. Use him this turn for Slaughter Swamp to get back your drop, use him next turn for Enemy of My Enemy.
In the different formats, he has varied uses. Currently in Silver Age, he provides excellent tech against the lethal discard deck that was so strongly represented at the Pro Circuit. Beyond that, almost every deck is running Enemy of My Enemy. Quite reasonably considered by most to be the best search available to VS and possibly even the best card ever printed, it still has a cost. Discard a character. Seems like a perfect fit to me. I have had great success with a Secret Six deck that runs House of Secrets and my regenerating friend. Basically the combination of those two cards reads, "Gain 4 endurance each and every turn." Who can argue with that?
There are many other scenarios and decks that can easily make room for at least 1 copy Mr. Mxyzptlk. Expect to see this guy floating around in the current Silver Age environment and the upcoming DC Modern Age. Don't be too surprised to see him making appearances in quite a few Golden age decks as well. Most decks in any format are running something with discard costs. And if that's the case, then you should seriously be looking at this other-dimension prankster.
