confused on night assailant

You can't use Peten the Dark Clown's effect since it isn't the last event taking place if discarded through Card Destruction, drawing cards through the effect of Card Destruction is last event taking place. Also, if Pinch Hopper is used for a Tribute Summon, Pinch Hopper effect does not trigger since it was not the last event taking place and the fact that the effect of Pinch Hopper is optional.

But, if Night Assailant was discarded through the effect of Magic Jammer to negate a Spell card that was activated, Night Assialnt effect activates afterwards after the currect chain involving Magic Jammer resolves all steps.

Is the reason why Night Assailant doesn't have to be the last event taking place in order to retrieve a Flip Effect monster because Night Assailant is not optional?

thats right, the reason it can work even though it wasnt the last thing to happen is becuase its effect is a manditory effect that needs to be resolved no matter what.  So if it is dicarded, sent, or destroyed while in your hand and goes to the graveyard then you have to use its effect even though it could be in the middle of a chain.

It's effect is mandatory unlike the case of Peten.
