damage step=damage calculation?

some cards activate in the damage step while some activate in damage calculation. I want to know if they are the same phase or different...

Injection fairy lily's effect...This card's effect can be activated only during the This card's effect can be activated only during the Damage Step of either player's turn. Pay 2000 Life Points to increase the ATK of this monster by 3000 points only during the Damage Step.

Reflect bounder's effect...When this face-up Attack Position card is attacked by a monster on your opponent's side of the field, before damage calculation is resolved in the Damage Step, this card inflicts damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the ATK of the attacking monster. Then, after damage calculation is resolved, this card is destroyed.

The link you gave does not work

I have yet to read Kevin's essay, so I'l post to the best of my knowledge.

First of all, the Damage Step is one of the 4(?) steps of the Battle Phase.

During the Damage Step, damage pionts are calculated and flip effects (and other appropriate effects) are applied (directly after damage calculation). Basically, Damage Calculation is a substep in the Damage Step where we take the attack of the two monsters and calculate how the damage is dealt. With the examples you gave, the reason "Reflect Bounder" says before damage calculation is just to make it clear that the effect applies before the two monsters go into 'combat' (so as to prevent any confusion with cards such as "Dark Ruler Ha Des".

Some of what I posted might not agree with what Kevin said in his essay, so I would appreciate it if those of you who read the essay would let me know :)

Just to clarify for people too lazy to click or who still don't know the steps (sorry if this is seen as Spamming, since the answer's been given, delete at your own discretion):

The Battle Phase (simplified)
Step 1: Entering the Battle Phase
In this step, you declare you're going to attack.

Step 2: Attack Declaration, or Battle Step
In this step, your attack is declared.
Example #1: "I attack your face-down card with my Mystic Swordsman LV2".
Example #2: "I attack your Berserk Gorilla with my Goblin Attack Force."
Example #3: "I attack your Injection Fairy Lily with my Goblin Attack Force."

Step 3: Damage Step
In case of Example #1, the face down monster is sent to the graveyard by the Swordsman's effect. No damage is done, the card has not been destroyed by battle and thus, you cannot summon a LV4 Mystic Swordsman.
In case of Example #2:
Both players determine the ATk of both cards. The Goblins have 300 ATK more then the Gorilla. Conclusion: Berserk Gorilla is destroyed and sent to the graveyard and the controller of that card takes 300 points of damage to his/her Life Points.
in case of Example #3:
Both players determine the ATK of both cards. The Goblins have 1900 ATK more then the Fairy, but the controller of Lily can now, in this step, pay 2000 Life Points to increase Lily's ATK with 3000 points. Now, Lily is stronger then the Goblins, the difference is a staggering 1100 points! Conclusion: The Goblins are destroyed and sent to the graveyard and the controller of that card takes 1100 points of damage to his/her Life Points.

A more detailed description of the Battle Phase can be found here:

My explanation has been simplified, yes, but still covers the basics (I believe), as found on the Upperdeck site.

Just click the link in the post above.

They should click the link since it does go into more detail about when things exactly would happen in the damage step like when an effect of say "Sasuke Samurai" would activate, or when would a card be flipped, etc.
