Dark Dust Spirit

now a friend of mine uses this card in his deck and this problem comes about.
if it is attacked while it is face down does the effect happen?
also if the attacking monster's atk is higher than the DEF of dark dust spirit is it destroyed? or it the attack negated because the card goes back to the hand?
there has been some debate and I would like to get some type of decision on this.

Okay, lets take a closer look at each portion of the text. Let's start with your first question:
"This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card returns to the owner's hand during the End Phase of the turn that this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up, destroy all face-up monsters on the field except this card."
An attack flips a face-down monster card face-up, even if the defender activated Waboku. As per its text, that flip would activate that portion of the effect.
"This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card returns to the owner's hand during the End Phase of the turn that this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. If this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up, destroy all face-up monsters on the field except this card."
The monster doesn't return to the hand until the End Phase, not during the middle of Damage Calculation. The fact that Dark Dust Spirit returns to the hand at the End Phase doesnt grant it immunity from being destroyed prior to that, like due to an effect or as a result of ordinary battle.
