Poison?... Loaded!!
I have the doubt corroding my soul"¦ can I turn a face-up attack position into face-down attack position with "Darkness Approaches?

If it is possible, would flip effects activate?

According to the ARRJ 1.1 you can anyway and I see no reason to assume otherwise. Since it's face down and so would be subject to being flipped face-up then the flip effects should apply again, however, note that it stays in attack position when flipped, it doesn't switch to defence position.

Also in the ARRJ 1.2 it says that you can switch the face down attack position monster to defence position without flipping it face-up.

ANother question: Doesn't this completely defy the mechanics of the game? Can I just go ahead and set a monster in face down attack position? Can it attack? My instinct says yes, no, and no. But this has really got me confused...

A monster may not usually be set in face-down attack mode, just like a monster usually may not be Normal Summoned in Defense mode.
A face-down monster cannot attack. A face-down monster that is attacked will be flipped during the Damage Step.

However, it is invulnerable to cards like Sasuke Samurai, Mystic Swordsman LV2 and Drillroid...
You should compare the ATK-points don't you, and use the ATK vs. ATK-damagecalculation-method..?
