Emergency Provisions

okay fellow judges and readers.

the situation is the following I know what the answer is and i have gotten a second oppinion that agrees with me. but now i need some cold hard facts. so here goes the situation.

I have had a Dust Tornado on the field for 1 turn.

it is my turn and i decide to activate Dust Tornado and target a s/t.

My opponent decides to not respond so i respond by using Emergency provisions, I pay the cost with Dust Tornado and gain 1000lp off of it.

Does the effect of Dust Tornado get negated yes or no?

I say no because Emeregency Provisions doesnt negate it sends the card to the graveyard but doesnt negate.

Oskar Darktide has told me the same thing.

another player at the tournament were this happend agreed with what i stated.

now i would like to hear from the rest of you.

the judge at the tournament ruled it that Dust Tornado does get negated.

just to have a little knowledge at what happend at the tourney.

Let me see if I can explain this right. When you chain Emergency Provision to Dust Tornado it becomes the first step in the chain. So by destroying Dust Tornado with Emergency Provision it techinally was never there to activate since Dust Tornado would be the last step in the chain. So you would gain 1000 lp but you would not get to destroy one of your opponents s/t. I hope this makes sense. I hate the way chains work backwards, it gives me such a headache.

this is from malawifan they pmed me right now.

Emergency provisions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Net rep gives the example as such "You can activate a normal spell card such as Raigeki then chain emergency provisions and send Raigeki to the graveyard to gain 1000 lifepoints and the effect of Raigeki will still resolve."

That would then also apply to traps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My take on this is the following, the card resolved correctly, the timing was right weather it being on the field or not doesnt mean its effect get negated.

Emergency provisions doesnt negate activation or effect of cards it sends to the graveyard as costs.

so i would need a much better explanation than "it was never there to activate"

because we all know that even if the card isnt on the field if it doesnt get its effect negated then its effect still resolves.

except for continous trapcard since they have to remain face up in order for their effects to take place.

Emergency Provisions does not negate a card. Dust Tornado is not a continuous trap, so does not need to remain face-up on the field to resolve. If Emergency Provisions is chained to Dust Tornado, Dust Tornado will still resolve properly.

Dlanaan is correct. Another example is if Premature Burial is activated and Emergency Provisions is chained. You gain the 1000 pts and the monster brought back by Premature is not destroyed. Sending Premature to the graveyard is a cost for Emergency Provisions. So in the original example Dust Tornado will still resovle allowing its owner to destroy 1 S/T on the field.

Premature Burial is actually a really bad example for that. If you chain Emergency Provisions to your Premature Burial and send your Premature Burial as a cost, then when it comes time for Premature Burial to resolve, as it will not be on the field, its effect will disappear (note: Premature Burial is an Equip Spell Card, thus falls into the continuous rules).

However, if you were to send Premature Burial to the Graveyard as a cost for Emergency Provisions AFTER you have let Premature Burial resolve (thus, in a separate chain), what you propose would happen.

For a truly excellent article on all things Emergency Provisions, I recommmend this article written by Curtis Schultz for Metagame.com.

Covers pretty much everything that has been mentioned by others and also gives excellent in depth examples.
