if i play Fiend Comedian and call it wrong do i look throw my deck or is it off the top of my deck

A card effect will always specify when you may see your deck. Just like you don't get to search for which cards you want from Pot of Greed, you don't get to search for Fiend Comedian. Assume it means "off the top of the deck" unless it says otherwise.
