Has anyone tried building decks without using restricted cards?

One problem I run into when deck building, and I'm sure this applies to plenty of others, is that I put too much thought into what restricted cards I should add. That's only natural, of course, as those cards are what often give our decks the best advantage. But I'd like to think more about the cards that are not restricted. I've said before that there are plenty of cards that often get overlooked. Not using restricted cards is a good way to give other cards more notice.

Even without restricted cards, there are still more than enough cards to choose from (Note that the following doesn't take Exchange of the Spirit into account and still allows Exodia to be played).

1768 cards in total

-23 Forbidden Cards
1745

-40 Limited Cards
1705

-10 Semi-Limited Cards
1695

Other unplayable cards:
1. Anti Raigeki
2. Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon (Unless another card is used as a proxy for BEUD in casual duels)
3. Call of the Grave
4. Gryphon Wing
5. Jar Robber
6. Primal Seed
7. White Hole
1688

XeroCreative used to have a method of dueling called Kage Style. In this form, no Limited Cards except the Exodia pieces can be used, and Semi-Limited cards are restricted to 1. So there's that if you'd still prefer to use Semi-Limited cards.

Hmm...maybe we should try "sans restricted cards" or Kage Style for a YVD tourney in the future.

Dark Hole is not banned anymore, it is limited down to 1. So White Hole would actually be playable. I don't even think about the restricted list when it comes to making decks. Usually when I'm making a deck the only thing I'm focused on is making the deck and trying to find the cards that fit around the theme and work with it.

"Not using restricted cards is a good way to give other cards more notice."

Restricted List is called Limited List in Yu-Gi-Oh! ;)

So when Limited cards are also banned, White Hole isn't of any use :p

Having the Banned cards and Limited cards make the game more creative for me. I tend to find other cards to use for the ones that get Banned/Limited. Do you really need a Pot of Greed, come on, it's not a make or break card. Is BLS that important to your deck? Why? There are other cards and combinations that are effective and have a lot of potential but people don't give them a chance. It helps break the cycle of cookie cutters and other non-original decks. But, thats just my opinion (and I don't care if it stinks).

I've really never looked at the restricted list for a "what is good and I must have in my deck". Statistically speaking most of the cards on the restricted list are there because of the advantage they can provide in the right decks and obviously being able to run 3 of such an advantageous card makes it too powerful. But many of these cards don't compliment each other so seeing too many of them all in the same deck is a sure sign you are dealing with somebody who doesn't understand card interaction and is just relying on someone else to tell them what is good.

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. If you look at the top 8 decks from a Regionals, or Shonen Jump event, 50% or more of the cards in the decks are limited and/or restricted in some manner. So what would be your definition of too many? 25 out of 40? That seems to be the average for those top 8 players.

Okay let me clarify. Up until this new list 22-25 has been the average. Not really much of a surprise since nearly all of the decks were Chaos and it was the same 22-25 cards every time and a few of those cards became limited because of the abuse they were getting in Chaos decks.

I run into a lot of new players that run the restricted list as a deck. Thinking that somehow the fact that the cards are all that good will make them the best possible choices. That was what I was referring to as too many.

Hopefully we'll be able to see a little more creativity now that some of the can't think of any reason not to use it cards have made it to the banned list.

Well, as monsters they are still 'playable'. :p

But their effects are completely and utterly useless! :D

Actually, I find it interesting to try building a deck ENTIRELY out of banned/restricted cards. Please read my intro

LOL.:) I can just see the opponent's confused stair as you sit across from them talking to your deck. (in a raspy golem voice) They can't possibly stop us now my precious cards. They can'ts use any of the nasty cards cause they're banneded. We'll beat them all won't we? Oh yes we will!
