heavy-> Call OTH & Decree

RIP Jacob KT 2/16/06
I always forget this ruling and have been told different things on different occassions

My opponent uses heavy storm

I chain royal decree
I then chain call of the haunted

arguement one:
heavy storm destroys them at the same time, call will trigger killing the recured monster

arguement two:
Call was at one point negated by royal decree so It (call) forgets what monster it brought back.

1 - Heavy Storm
2 - Royal Decree
3 - Call of the Haunted

Resolve backwards.

Call of the Haunted resolves, and Special Summons a monster. Royal Decree resolves, and negates all face-up Trap Cards (note the monster isn't destroyed, and because of Royal Decree nor would it be if Call of the Haunted left the field).

Now Heavy Storm resolves, and destroys all Spell and Trap Cards on the field. However, the effect of Royal Decree doesn't switch off until after the resolution of Heavy Storm. The monster revived with Call of the Haunted is NOT destroyed, as its effect was being negated by Royal Decree when it was destroyed.

Call of the Haunted does NOT "forget" which monster it revived. It is simply having its effect negated at the time.

But since Call of the Haunted was still attached to the monster, wouldn't the monster be destroyed when Heavy Storm destroyed Call of the Haunted? I understand that the monster would remain if Royal Decree was the last card to resolve, thus negating Call's effect, but since Heavy Storm is the last to resolve, Call of the Haunted should be destroyed and as such, so should the monster.

I think it is because even though Call was still attached to the monster, by virtue of chain resolution Call was being negated by Decree at the time of destruction. I would assume that Heavy Storm clears the entire field simultaneously (sp?) so Decree and Call are sent to the GY at the same time. Thus, Call does not have a chance to reassert it's effect.

I think that is the point. Sometimes these rulings can make my head hurt.

Call of the Haunted's "destroy that monster!" effect (the triggering of) and the switching off of Royal Decree's effect happen at exactly the same time. This point is immediately after Heavy Storm has resolved, and the chain is finished, but before anything else can happen.

The thing is, since Royal Decree's effect is still active, Call of the Haunted's destruction effect cannot trigger. If they both disappear at the same time, Call of the Haunted's destruction effect cannot trigger again (now that is is able to), so the opportunity for Call of the Haunted to destroy a monster is lost.

This is NOT the same as "missing the timing", note. That's a completely different gameplay term. But in terms of the meanings of English words, that's effectively it.

they are both continous effects that are only active as long as they remain face up on the field. If I destroy two simultaneously then it would stand to reason that all effects triggering off their destruction would resolve as if neither continous effects are active.

why does konami insist on making my head hurt by breaking the laws of reality??? :eek:rcspash: :eek:rcspash: :eek:rcspash:

Royal Decree and Call of the Haunted 2006-05-04 11:59:00 <Kevin Wickware>

I have a set Royal Decree and a set Call of the Haunted.

My opponent activates Heavy Storm. I chain Royal Decree, then when my opponent declines to respond, I chain Call of the Haunted targeting Airknight Parshath in my graveyard. Then the chain resolves.

When the Heavy Storm destroys the Call of the Haunted, will the Airknight Parshath live because of Royal Decree or is it destroyed too?

Your interpretation is correct. "Call of the Haunted" was negated by "Royal Decree" at the time it was destroyed, so "Airknight Parshath" will remain on the field.

That's because you are grasping it in the wrong way, though these cards are continous effect, as soon as they have fully resolved (succesfully) their effects kick in (ergo, the nature of continous effect... "as soon as").
