Is Blast with Chain's effect mandatory?

If I have Blast with Chain face-up attached to a monster and my opponent plays Heavy Storm and he has no other card on his side of the field and all I have is the BwC with the equipped monster... do I have to destroy my monster?

Unfortunately, yes you have to destroy the equipped monster. The card text and effect don't say "you can" but rather "destroy one monster". In this instance, you have to destroy your own monster.

this started me wondering, if i could actually target heavy storm with blast's effect, since cards in a chain dont go to the graveyard until all of them resolved or were sent there by an effect of a card in the chain.... i was thinking blast's effect might be added to the end of the existing chain / heavy's effect....i thought that since recent ruling was, that blast activated in dmg on gearfried would destroy attacking monster before doing calculation - rather than waiting for resolve effects part of dmg step....but upon looking at the rulings, i see- " if this card is destroyed in the middle of a chain - it's effect will start a new chain after the existing chain resolves..."
which gave me pause... how can i figure out when already active cards get their effects "triggered" in a chain, are those effects going on end of existing chain, or beginning a new chain... or is it always a new chain?

If Blast With Chain is destroyed by the effect of Heavy Storm, Blast's effect starts a new chain that can be chained to. Remember that none of the cards are sent to the graveyard until all the effects of the chain(s) resolve...In this case Heavy Storm is activated...Blast gets destroyed in the chain but before it is sent to the graveyard, it's effect activates, thus starting a new chain...player targets a monster for Blast's effect and at that time, the opponent can chain to Blast's effect with a card like Compulsory Evacuation Device to keep his monster from being destroyed.

I have a question about blast with chain. This isn't really a question, but rather than a request for confermation.

If blast with chain is destroyed while Macro or a Banisher is on the field, and it's removed from play, it's effect is still activated right? It doesn't say that it needs to go to the gy.

It still activates on the Field, where it was triggered, but we must be careful to draw a distinction between an effect triggering and its activation, as well as its resolution.

cuzwbd: The damage calculation portion of the damage step does not work like a chain. you have the damage calculation, then apply damage (wherein monsters are considered "destroyed" and Life Points are reduced). As you are calculating damage, BWC gets equiped, then destroyed, triggering it's effect, then, still before the application of damage, BWC's effect activates and resolves, destroying the attacking Monster, at whioch point, no damage is dealt, because the Monster that would be doing damage is no longer alive.
