Cardinal

If i discard 'king of the swamp' from my hand with graceful charity. Would i be able to use its effect to get polmerization to my hand?
please let me know.
Thanks

Nope. Like Kuriboh, he must be discarded for his own effect.

The key to this is in the highlighted bit:

King of the Swamp
You can substitute this card for any 1 Fusion Material Monster. When you do this, the other Fusion Material Monster(s) must be the correct one(s). Discard this card from your hand to the Graveyard to add a "Polymerization" from your Deck to your hand. The Deck is then shuffled.

Night Assailant reads this way:

Night Assailant
FLIP: Select 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field and destroy it. When this card is sent directly from your hand to the Graveyard, return 1 Flip Effect Monster from your Graveyard to your hand.

The difference being one is an ignition effect, the other is a trigger effect. Another way to understand King of the Swamp is to read it this way: Send this card... in order to (or so that you might), that is, intentionally for the express purpose of...

Night Assailant and their ilk, which automatically activate will have "when" as a condition, often with specifications following.

Hope that answers your question. There are a lot of ifs and or buts along with this, it is just a general case.

It's the difference between an effect that requires manual activation and one that triggers of the event of something else. Neither one can be activated in the manner of the other. A manually activated effect won't go off by itself. And a Trigger Effect can't be activated whenever you choose to.
