LON-EN076 Maryokutai

Okay I was like, "Summon Maryokutai and end my turn" and he was like, "Kay, I'll draw, nuthin in standby phase, main phase one I'll activate Heavy Storm"....and I'm like, "Cheyah! Like I'm going to let you do THAT to my Level Limit Area B!" and he's like, "Dude, like you don't have any face down cards....like Magic Jammer, like you could stop it!" <rolling eyes>
and I'm like, "SEE my Maryokutai.....you are SO not paying attention!"

<clearing throat and running my fingers through my salt & pepper hair>

Okay, I'm done with my introduction. I'll try to refrain from acting young for the rest of the card review.

Maryokutai, not a monster that likely will last until your next turn if face up and you don't have any bind cards to protect it. That's the whole point though isn't it? Protection! The bind card protects Maryokutai and Maryokutai protects the bind card.

If you've ever played a deck that uses Level Limit Area B, Gravity Bind, or Messenger of the Peace you know that you often get your field set, don't have too much trouble keeping monsters on the field, and often have a space or two left in your deck that you wonder what would be the best card to put in to fill it out or to protect the bind cards that are your life blood. In my Clown deck and Burn deck Maryokutai comes in VERY handy and I use it on a consistant basis.

One of the odd things is that not so different from my introduction, other players really haven't even seen this powerful effect monster or haven't a clue what it does. I've had more cards like Heavy Storm, Lightning Vortex, Delinquent Duo wasted against me for this reason than you can count.

Many is the time I've had a Dream Clown in attack position, a Swarm of Scarabs and Swarm of Locusts in face down defense position, my Messenger of the Peace active, I have control of the field, and now I want to protect my perfect set-up. I don't need to summon or set another monster that destroys spell/trap cards or monsters, that situation is well in hand. It's at this point that Maryokutai shines. It's also a great way to protect that Wave Motion Cannon that your opponent is sweating out.

Sure you can protect your S/T cards with Magic Jammer but that will cost you an extra card IF you have one to discard. Maryokutai can still serve as a monster to set for one turn to tide you over to your next draw, Magic Jammer on the other hand is a poor top deck. Maryokutai you can bring back to your playing field with Call of the Haunted or Premature Burial, you can search for it with Sangan or special summon it with Last Will or Mother Grizzly, try doing that with Magic Jammer.

Is this monster for useful in most decks or side decks? Absolutely not. It IS, however, a monster that should get serious consideration for any deck that runs bind cards. I play one Maryokutai in each deck of mine that has bind cards. I wouldn't likely run more than once copy of it but I wouldn't be without the one copy either.

Card Text:

You can only activate this card's effect during your opponent's turn. When your opponent activates a Spell Card, Tribute this face-up card to negate the activation of the Spell Card and destroy it.

Rulings

1. This monster's effect is multi-trigger, and therefore Spell Speed 2. So it may be used against Quick-Play Spell Cards.

2. You can Tribute "Maryokutai" to activate its effect during the Battle Phase if it is not attacking or being attacked.

A very much underated card next to A-Team: Trap Disposal Unit. Both are quite potent when used correctly. I made a FINAL deck that took advantage of the effects of both cards mixed with The Creator and could use The Creators' effect to being back those monsters when needed. Very useful in the right deck.

Great Card, also considering this could be used with the Dark Hex to get a "Last Warrior from Another Planet"

Hmm... Call of the Haunted and this = spell card rejected! awesome.

Erm, not quite. This is how it would resolve...

Player A plays Pot of Greed.

Player B chains Call of the Haunted on Maryokutai.

Chain has no further links, and resolves.

Player B special summons Maryokutai from the Graveyard. However, Maryokutai's effect must be used when a spell is activated, which it already has been, meaning that Maryokutai can't use his effect at this point. Pot of Greed resolves normally. Maryokutai can now be used to negate spells, but it missed the boat on Pot of Greed.

Hmm. this has really made me think. I used to use Maryokutai, a long time ago (love the pic!) But I am recently renewing interest in a Spatial Collapse deck, and have been experiencing problems with getting hit by Heavy Storm, MST, etc. This could be a nice surprise, alongside Yomi Ship, to secure my field position. Especially once 5 Ojama Tokens have eliminated any attack threats
