magic cylinder

Just a quick and easy question on this ever so popular trap:

Can magic cylinder stop a direct attack to life points by a monster....be it a toon or simply because you have no monsters on your side of the field when your opponent attacks?

I've heard answers (and by answers I mean rulings) going both ways so I figure here is the best place to get it resolved.

Magic Cylinder doesn't state that the attack must be against a monster so yes you can use it against direct attacks. The confusion here likely results from the fact that the toon effect allows them to attack directly and so your opponent was misclassing the damage as effect damage when it its still an attack with battle damage.

Hmm... that's a first for me, I haven't heard anyone contradict that you can activate Magic Cylinder when attacked directly, I guess the game is a lot different in other areas of the country/world.

In any case, Magic Cylinder can be activated to stop a direct attack, even if it's a Toon Monster. Magic Cylinder simply says "Negate the attack of a monster" meaning any monster, except of course Jinzo because Jinzo negates traps, ;).
