Rulings...RULINGS?! What are these "RULINGS" you speak of?!?
Through the magic of time travel, we review Magician of Chaining Attack yesterday. Because, you know, I have impeccable timing when it comes to doing stuff and...stuff.
DARK/Spellcaster is one of the best combinations in the game (Chaos, Strike, Mag. Circle, Dimension Magic when it comes out this November in the Spellcaster structure deck). That is a solid start for MoCA (heh...Mocha) and his stats are a solid 1600/1200, meaning he is a decent beatstick that can do some damage when neccesary, but isn't a "beatstick" by definition.
And, because stats haven't been the only things that mattered on a monster since before John Danker's prom (for more info on THAt event, read his autobiograhpy, entitled "From J.C. to G.W."), Mocha has an effect: 400 damage aimed right at your opponent's head every time you manage to pull out a normal spell card. Shall we take a quick look at the list of things that suddenly got "Sparks the opponent twice" added to their effect?
-Smashing Ground
-Heavy Storm
-Nobleman of Crossout
-Swords of Revealing Light
-Creature Swap
-Giant Trunade
-Different Dimension Capsule
-Pot of Avarice (eeww...)
-Upstart Goblin
-Book of Life
-Book of Taiyou
-Monster Reincarnation
-Confiscation
-Terraforming
-Soul Exchange
-Brain Control
Just to name a few.
But, you may be asking yourself (or not, either way this is MY review so I do it MY way), "How is 400 damage giong to really affect the game?" On it's own? Not by much. But remember that Mocha's effect is culmulative, so multiple Mochas means multiple 400's. That would make Brain Control a fairly even trade (800 damage to both, and you get to borrow a monster). However, I wouldn't consider Mocha to be much more than a finisher in decks that have a hard time finishing off the opponent and run a lot of spells. Should you decide to give Dust Tornado the shaft and run zero traps at all, then Mocha might be a viable option. Otherwise, he is probably about average.
Advanced: 3/5 Dead-middle average. Consider teching one in for a little while, and if you don't like him side him out.
Traditional: 0/5 Confucious say: He who runs non-broken card gets eaten by broken ones. (Eh...sounded better in Chinese)
Sealed: 4/5 I don't recall EXACTLyY what is in the set, but I am pretty sure that 1600 is one of the higher ATKs for EEN, meaning that 1600 ATK attached to any sort of effect could be pretty game breaking. Jsut make sure that you don't get hit by any VW's, Browns, or Dark Realm Soldier guy.
