MAGICAL MERCHANT

FLIP: Pick up (not draw) cards from the top of your Deck until a Spell Card or Trap Card is picked up. Add that card to your hand. Any other cards picked up are sent to the Graveyard.

MONSTER GATE

Offer 1 monster on your side of the field as a Tribute. Pick up cards from your Deck until you pick up a monster that can be Normal Summoned, and Special Summon it. Send any other cards picked up to the Graveyard.

Ruling on Magical Merchant:

If you pick up your entire Deck and there were no Spell or Trap Cards, then "Magical Merchant"'s effect disappears.

Ruling on Monster Gate:

If you go through your whole Deck without finding a card to pick up, "Monster Gate"'s effect is negated and the cards you picked up are shuffled back into the Deck.

Now, the wording is almost exactly the same (except for monster/ spell/trap card).
Then why is the ruling different if you dont have the type of card you are searching for?

I believe both rulings are essentially the same; they are just worded differently.  If Magical Merchant's effect disappears, then you do not carry out any part of its effect; so no card is added to your hand and no cards are sent to the Graveyard and all the cards you picked up go back into your deck.  Presumably you would be expected to shuffle the cards since seeing the order of all the cards in your deck would be unfair.  This is essentially the same as Monster Gate's ruling.
