the drumming duelist
hey all...i went to this card store the other day and bought a vs. system marvel starter deck of x-men vs. the brotherhood coz i was curious about the game. the owner at the store taught me how to play so now im kinda hooked....anyone have any advice on what packs i should kinda invest into?

Truthfully, every set of VS brings a different dimension to the game. There isn't one set that really stands out more than another. It's a bit different than yu-gi-oh, in terms of what are staples, since there are no real staple cards. Each different team has team stamped cards that could do the same function as another card that already exists, but fits that teams theme better. So, basically what you should decide first is what team do you want to play then buy packs from the set that supports that team best.

Basically, what DaAmazing1 said. Pick a team and learn it. If that team isn't your cup of tea after a time move on to something else. Let me give you one important peice of advice, though.

I see soo many new players make this same mistake. Don't make your first deck a Team-up Deck. Stick with a single affiliation. Team-ups are more complex and require a basic understanding of how single affilitions work before you gradiate to them. I've seen more then my fair share of players loose interest in the game because they started with the more technical stuff too early. Your first deck shouldn't be The Brave and the Bold. Do just Teen Titans or just Gotham Knights, but not both. Work your way into the multiple affiliations gradually.

EDI: And Inyu, your sig image is a little to big. Please trim it down a bit.

If you need help learning and you don't have anyone around you who can teach you.

You can learn how to play the game by:

1. Reading the Basic Rulebook that came with your starter.

2. Then going to http://www.ude.com/marvel and watch the Online Flash Demo they have on the game there, that'll teach you a lot about the game.

3. And then read the Comprehensive Rules Guide (make sure you have you have time to, it's extremely long, but it's everything you need to know about the game to judge/play competitive) at http://www.ude.com/rules

Im curious, since Ive never played anything but ygo: What are the basic Teams that are available right now? Or, where can I find a list of those teams and what each one specializes in?

The most popular are currently:
  1. Sentenals
  2. Teen Titans
  3. Marvel Knights
  4. Kang Councel
  5. Brotherhood
  6. Gotham Knights
  7. Doom
Now, the new golden age tournament format has yet to start, and I'm expecting to see some interesting things come out of the Avenagers set.

There are also many more teams out there but I think these are the core teams that I have seen. People will mix and match teams, but to start pick a team that you like and then once you are comfortable deck building and playing try to get creative...

Your investment decision should be based on what you plan on doing with the cards...Here's what I think:

Goal: Money
Don't buy any packs. You won't be able to turn around and sell singles for what you paid for the packs or boxes; usually.

Goal: Fun
If you have favorite team, (obviously) go for the set with that team. Here's a breakdown for sets:
Marvel Origins: X-Men, Brotherhood, Fantastic Four, Doom, Sentinels, Negative Zone, Skrull
Spider-Man: Spider-Friends, Synister Syndicate
Marvel Knights: Marvel Knights, Crime Lords, X-Statix, Underworld
Avengers: Avengers, Masters of Evil, Squadron Supreme, Thunderbolts, Kang
DC Origins: Gotham Knights, Arkam Inmates, Teen Titans, League of Assasins, Fearsome Five, Deathstroke
Superman: Team Superman, Revenge Squad, Darkseid's Elite, New Gods
Green Lantern: Green Lantern Corps, Emerald Enemies, Manhunters, Anti-Matter
Later sets have some cards that support earlier teams, but a bulk of the team shows up in the set mentioned. There may be a team or two I either missed, spelled wrong, or labeled wrong; but you get the jist...

Goal: Competition
Constructed turnaments are currently DC Modern, which means you can only play cards from Superman and Green Lantern. Golden age is coming up, which will allow cards from all the sets. Then we go back to Marvel Modern, which will only allow the latest 2 sets of Marvel.
Sealed is currently Avengers, but when JLA is released in a month, it will be JLA.

Good luck and welcome to the world of VS.

There's more than 33 teams currently in the game with at least 3 more being added with every set. It'd take me all day to list every single team but here are a few that I can think of.

X-Men
Brotherhood
Sentinels
Skrull
Fantastic Four
Doom
Negative Zone
Gotham Knights
Arkham Inmates
Fearsome Five
Teen Titans
Deathstroke
League of Assassins
Spider-Friends
Sinister Syndicate
Team Superman
Revenge Squad
New Gods
Marvel Knights
Crime Lords
Underworld
Green Lantern
Anti-Matter
Manhunter
Avengers
Thunderbolts
Masters of Evil
Squadron Supreme

And that's really just the ones I can name off the top of my head, there are 4 I can't seem to come up with right now, but yeah, there's a good list for you to start from.

The next set, JLA, will add JLA, JLI, Secret Society of Super Villains, and Injustice Gang to the mix. JLA sneak previews are Oct. 29/30 and the set should be in stores by the first week in November, second at the latest. It'll be tournament legal starting December 1.

my fav. team will probably X-Statics and thier loner play.

but thats just sticking with 1 team and so forth.

ive tried.

Revenge squad + Fearsome Five = Fearsome Squad
X-men
Marvel Knights
Underworld
Underworld + Revenge Squad = Under Revenge
Teen Titans + Team Superman = Team Titans
Thunderbolts + Avengers
Avengers
Squadron Supreme
Arkham Inmates
Arkham Inmates + Manhunter = Inmate Hunter

I only played the inmate hunter deck because i wanted to build a deck out deck with Emperor Joker, which is probably my favorite art card, which is the one in my avatar.

when i did revenge squad was because it was the first insane deck i had lost to becuase Doomsday just beat me up. and doomsday is kool, i really like that card. :D

i also like psymon and dr. light vomit deck.

now from that ive also seen a DOom + Gama BOomb Deck, which is preaty sick, if you let it last till turn 7 dont consider your self wining unless you can negate.

wow...thanks for everyones input...i would like to make a teen titans deck, but i kinda like the brotherhood too. magneto, master of magnetism is awesome...what packs could i find the titans or the brotherhood in?

dj..i'd love to decrease the size of my sig but i dont know how...i keep trying to on my account page, but it wont stay decreased...ill just try to find a new sig or something....

i guess id like to play both for fun and mayb competitively if i find anywhere that has tourneys for it...im a bit confused tho..so constructed tourneys mean ur like limited to a certain set?

depending on how they do it.

right now like they stated its DC modern, meaning you can only use the 2 recents sets in a branch.

there are currently 2 branches. DC and Marvel.

so DC has its sets of Origins, Man of Steel, and Green Lanter Corp. so you can only use Man of Steel and GLC.

when it goes to marvel Modern itll be Avengers and Marvel Knights, because the sets marvel has currently are.

Origins, Web of Spider man, Marvel Knights, and the recent Avengers.

not many sets if you think about it in branch, but if you play golden age, then.

you can use any set from either branch or combination of branches.

For Teen Titans you have to get some DC Origin Packs, since the titans were widly seen in Origins, there were a few in Man of Steel but the core set was in Origins.

For brother hood you have to look at Marvel Origins basically again the core set was in Origins, im not sure if a few went to Man of Steel, i know there is a new Brotherhood character in avengers, so preaty much for a core set just go were they are found.

preaty much, your starting from the beggining of the game, when all it was about was power ups and no tricky mechanic.

once you step into web of spidey you will learn about evasion. when you step into man of steel you will learn about Comic Counters.

Marvel Knights bring up the Concealed mechanic

Green lantern basically bring out will power and Concealed Optional.

and then avengers is Reservist.

JLA will have something else, but i dont know what it is.

Personally I would start out with a deck that is easy and cheap to build. I went with Gotamn Knights when i started and they aren't cheap. Right now I have a deck that cost me about $15 to put together minus a Beatdown or two.

Some cheap but fun decks that I can think of are
Squadren ($20-$30 to make it somewhat competive) It is a hard deck for a beginner though.
Thunderbolts (Cheap deck can be anywhere from $10-$50 depending what you put in it.) Easy to play to.
Underworld (Don't know a price for this deck but isn't much) Takes a little time to learn how to play.
and Marvel Knights (Wild ride will cost anywhere from $60-$80 for a playset) Can be a competive deck. Compared to Tier 1 decks this is still cheap.

Evasion, you preaty much stun your character with the keyword Evasion and during wrap up you can recover it with your normal turn recovery.

so instead of recovering only 1, you recover 2, the one you evaded and the normal recover you get. you dont have to recover during wrap up though. but thats preaty much it.

Cosmic Counter, you can preaty much look at it like the Magic Counter that Breaker gets. Cosmic counters are just 1 counter and are active aslong as the character doesnt lose it.

once they lose it, then they lost it, you can gain more counters with counter producing cards just like in yugi, Apprentice Magician can give a counter to breaker.

Super Girl can get a counter form some 1 drop that i forgot its name and so forth. preaty basic.

Concealed, basically its a whole new set of characters that are colored black and they come out in a different area of the playing board.

usually you only have 1 side but when you bring a shadow character the playing field devides into 2 parts, Visible and hidden.

all the visible characters are the normal Orange style color and the hidden well their black. easy to remember.

Willpower, its just a number, and nothing more. all characters before this mechanic got released have the text Willpower: 0

Concealed Optional - THis time around you get the option if you want the concealed character to come out in the visible or hidden area.

Reservist - preaty much before when you placed a character in the resource row it was considered gone. and it was quite a painfull choice sometimes others it was no big deal, but with this it makes the choice even less paifull since these special characters can be recruited from the resource row. all you do is reveal it and recruit it as normal and then you get 1 card from your hand to replace the card you just recruited.

its preaty much hold your spot for a future plot twist or location. which is very kool.

thats preaty much it. for new stuff added for the game.

i know Helpoemer and Dj are more knowledgeble on the game than I am, i basically just play this game not judge or anything. they can help you out more than i can.

I assume your prices are buying singles? I've gotten a box from each set, and have not been able to build a functional, single team deck with the 24 packs. :(

you can build a deck, it wont be ubber strong but you can build one.

ts good to get singles because its faster to finish the deck you are working on, but if its not just 1 then multiple boxes help alot. and you end up spending alot of money.

i dont know any place around where i live that sells vs. singles..so im a bit limited to packs for now...
Yeah, there aren't too many places in Fremont that sell singles. Several cards shops used to, but don't anymore.
If you're up for a drive, Superstars in Cupertino has a good selection and pretty reasonable prices.
