Painful Choice/Night Assailant Question

It was always my belief, that for a card to be "discarded", it had to be in your hand.

Everybody told me that Night Assailant's effect WOULD NOT activate when used with Painful Choice, because Night Assailant never goes to your hand.

However, I just got the newest rulebook from the Structure Decks. This is the definition for "Discard To The Graveyard" in the rulebook:"DISCARD to the graveyard means to place a card FROM YOUR HAND in the graveyard because of a card effect or adjusting the number of cards in your hand during your end phase".

So now, correct me if I'm wrong...but if you discard Night Assailant with Painful Choice, as I have alway's believed, you WILL get his second effect, right???

You will not. Painful Choice never places the cards in your hand. Discard may be a poor word on Painful Choice, but it most certainly does not trigger Night Assailant (or Forced Requisition for that matter).

The Rulebook is of course stating the default definition of "discard" and card text and rulings overrules that.

The cards for Painful Choice are considered discarded directly from the Deck to the Graveyard. The correct term is "discard" which does not necessarily have to be from Hand. The wording on Needle Worm is a perfect example of this, as is Morphing Jar #2 etc..

As stated Night Assailant will not trigger from this.

"Discard" is just one of the various ways of "sending a card to the Graveyard" it is just a specific way to do so. It is used to trigger any effects that would trigger off of a "Discard" rather than simply generically "Sending"

It does not have to be from Hand, and card text ALWAYS overrides the Rulebook, so Painful Choice takes precedence over the 5.0 in this case or any other case.

Rhetoric Questions

  • Rule Book:
Attack Directly means"¦ "¦In this case, the damage to the player will be equal to the monster's Attack.

Does that mean Shadowknight Archfiend does 2000 damage while attacking directly?
    ___
Paying a cost means an action "¦ in order to summon a monster or activate an effect.

Does that mean Toon World 1000LP payment is not a cost?
    ___
A trap card must always be placed face-down on the field

Does that mean when you activate a trap card from your hand allowed by Makyura the Destructor, does it go face-down so that you can activate it again another turn?

Turn to page 8 and read the second paragraph. If you're going to go by the rulebook, make sure to read the entire rulebook and not to quote selectively from the back.

Why the Glossary entry exists:

LOD-085 The Secret of The Bandit
Spell
This card can only be activated during Main Phase 1. Select 1 monster on your side of the field. Each time the selected monster inflicts Battle Damage, your opponent must discard 1 card randomly during the turn this card is activated.

Also Hiro's Shadow Scout and Drop Off don't mention "Hand" but they mention drawing so it can be deduced that it was in the hand
