Let's say I activate Painful Choice and I get Invader of Darkness, Dark Ruler Ha Des, Night Assailant x2, and Sinister Serpent. If my opponent selects Sinister Serpent, do I get the effect of Night Assailant activated???
No.
Night Assailant's effect is only activated when you discard it from your hand. Painful choice effect selects 5 cards, but only the one your opponent selects is put into your hand. The other 4 are just discarded straight.
