borrowed cards
from UDE's Player Management Forums

I had a situation occur the other day that I need some insight on. 2 players A and B. Before the tournament, player B borrowed some cards from player A to use during the event, about 16. Player A had no objections at the time.

This being a local event, we had a total of 4 rounds, everything goes fine until round 4, the final round. Paired together at table 1 are Player A and Player B. Round starts, and so does shouting from that table. This was a bit hard for me to handle, as I was the only judge for the tournament. So I went over, got a basic idea of what was going on, then took each one in private to get the full situation, which was this.

Once the round began, player A demanded that B return his cards. That I can't really say much about, since the cards belong to him, I don't really have the right to say he can't have them back. The obvious problem here is, it's one thing if player A had to leave and needed his cards back. But to fine with it until he gets paired against that player is quite openly suspecious.

At this point, I once again took player A aside privately to discuss this. I asked him why he wanted the cards returned. "Because I need them" I asked if there was a problem with his deck which would require the cards, he said no. He said he needed them for a trade, I responded that he can't trade during his game, so what harm would it be to let him hang onto them. At that point he just started saying they're his cards, he wants them back, and that was the only reason he would give.

At that point, I explained that since it was the final round and he was paired against that player, the whole thing was pretty suspcious. I then told him that they are his cards, and he has every right to request them back, and I would not stop him from doing so. I then told him I would give him a couple of options.

His first option was to take the cards back. I warned him however that if he did so, I would have to investigate this as possible cheating, which I said, given the timing, and your reasons, you've done little to convince me that it is not, and we would go from there. I then told him if he was willing to go back, and allow the game to be played out and his cards to be returned after the round, I would be willing to grant an extention and be willing to leave things at that.

At that point he started to try and argue further. I told him that he's already wasted enough time out of the round. He knows his options, he needs to choose one, as wasting the next half hour arguing with me was not one. He needs to make a choice, and we will continue this discussion afterward. He went back to his table. Player B turned in the match slip about 5 minutes later. I asked what happened. Player B said he forfeited the match, asked for his stuff back and left.

I need to know, if I handled the situation correctly. I also need to know what should I have done if he insisted on taking back his cards and play out the match. Instict tells me that the situation would need to be investigated as cheating, but I wasn't too sure.
