Marked Cards
from UDE's Player Management Forums
"12. Marked Cards
Players must ensurethat their cards are in good condition and do not have markings that wouldallow the cards to be identified from looking at the backs of the cards.Players should check their cards after every round and replace cards that areworn or marked.
Players may not applydecorations to a card that obscure a significant portion of the card’s image ortext. This includes significant art modification or art replacement."
There has been a trend in our area in taking both black andcolored markers to color and black out the artwork on cards. Some competitiveplayers do this to almost half their decks. Sometimes, after giving warnings toplayers several times, there have been game losses given to repeat offenders. The only thing I believe is ok is a signature on the card and only if thesignature doesn't obscure the original artwork and text of the card and doesn'tpress through to the back of the card.
One thing I think that is very important is that fact thatthis player graffiti can affect game play as some of the cards can appear asother cards at first glance. In my opinion, the problem needs to be addressedat this level due to the gray area of judgment section 12 of the UDE tournamentpolicy can imply. I have some old emails from the old judge list that I use toshow that I am making correct judgments in this area. However, with the oldjudge list being inactive, using those emails can raise more questions than itanswers.
The problem with the players lies in the fact that most ofthe players give me the same answer. "I played with this deck at the lastregional tournament and/or SJC and the Judges said it was ok" is thereuniform response.
Some official response either allowing or disallowing ofthis practice would be appreciated.
