does magical explosion "target" the spell cards in the graveyard that it counts? or have any actual interaction with them at all?

It doesn't target or interact with the Spells. It justs looks at them.

Another way of thinking of this is with Magical Explosion, there is no interaction or targetting, merely an acknowlegement of the number of spell cards, an acknowlegement of their existence and that they are in the graveyard.

So much could be solved if Konami just used the word "Target" for targeting effects, like every other TCG does.
