Royal Decree - when activated in a chain

Hello

Could someone please clarify the following...

If Royal Decree is activated by my opponent in response to one of my card effects - like Mirror Force - I believe that his Royal Decree effect cannot cancel my Mirror Force.

I understand this after reading the Advanced Gameplay on the UDE site which states that "You CANNOT activate (flip face-up) a Continuous Trap Card and also use its effect in the same chain. In order to use the effect of a Continuous Trap Card, it must have been activated (flipped face-up) before the current chain was initiated."

This scenario has been played many times in my local area and I now believe it has been played incorrectly, based on my new understanding of the above ruling.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

You can activate Royal Decree in a chain to Mirror Force. Resolving backwards, Royal Decree would negate all traps, and Mirror Force would resolve without effect.

The example you gave applies to continuous traps that have other activation requirements, such as Ultimate Offering, or Royal Oppression. These kinds of traps are "activated" twice.

The first: When flipping the card from face down to face up.
The second: When the card is already face up, its effect is used/"activated" (i.e. paying the cost to use its effect)

You cannot however, use the first and the second "activations" in the same chain.

Example: If Mystical Space Typhoon targets your face down Ultimate Offering during your opponent's battle phase, you may not activate UO (flip it face up) AND pay the 500LP to summon/set a monster in the same chain.

You may only flip it face up in this chain (which would be pointless anyways)

In less words (and a bit more understandible ;) ):

You have different types of Continuous Traps: Continuous Traps that have an continuous effect (like Royal Decree or Imperial Order) and Continuous Traps that have an Ignition / Trigger / Multi-trigger kind of effect (like Royal Oppression or Ultimate Offering).

The text that you're quoting is meant for the last group.

Continuous Traps with a continuous effect work immediately when the trap is resolved, so when you chain Decree to Mirror Force, Mirror Force WILL be negated.

So, if Royal Decree is the last card to be activated in a chain, then by way of resolving the chain, Royal Decree would negate ALL trap cards activated during the same chain?

Not quite. Chain #1:

Player 1: Mirror Force
Player 2: Royal Decree

Royal Decree negates Mirror Force. Royal Decree stays on the field with its trap negation effect active. Chain #2:

Player 1: Mirror Force
Player 2: Royal Decree
Player 1: Dust Tornado

Royal Decree doesn't start negating traps until it resolves, so in this case Dust Tornado resolves first and destroys the Royal Decree. Then Royal Decree resolves, but it is gone from the field, so its continuous effect does not affect anything earlier in the chain. Finally, Mirror Force resolves, and it destroys the attacking monsters.

Royal Decree negates any traps that precede it in the chain, but only if it survives. If it is destroyed or its activation is negated by something later in the chain (Dust Tornado, Mystical Space Typhoon, Solemn Judgment, Seven Tools of the Bandit), then it has no effect on traps earlier in the chain.

He said "last card" to be activated in the chain. Not activated in the middle of the chain. Of course Royal Decree can be destroyed if its activated in the middle of a chain because it will not have resolved yet.

If it is the very last card activated, it resolves first and negates all others, so there is no chance of it being destroyed, especially since it can't chain to a Counter Trap.
