Ancient Gear Engineer
Effect Monster (Machine / EARTH / 5 Stars / ATK 1500 / DEF 1500)
Negate the effect of any Trap Card that targets this card, and destroy that Trap Card. If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any Spell or Trap Cards until the end of the Damage Step. When this card attacks, destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on your opponent's side of the field at the end of the Damage Step.
Let's take a look at one of the new Ancient Gear monsters from the Machine Re-Volt structure deck. In many ways, this guy is similar to Elemental Hero Wildheart, so let's compare the two.
Ancient Gear Engineer
Pros:
- Immune to any Traps that target it
- Immune to opponent's Spells/Traps in the Battle Phase
- Can destroy a S/T after attacking
- Searchable (Giant Rat, Last Will, Sangan)
- Machine type is well-supported
- Ancient Gear support
- EARTH support
Cons:
- 5 Star, 1500 ATK
Elemental Hero Wildheart
- Immune to Traps
- Searchable (Giant Rat, Last Will, Sangan, Reinforcement of the Army)
- Warrior type is well-supported
- Elemental Hero support
- EARTH support
Cons:
- none really
So as we see, both have 1500 ATK, both are EARTH, both have well-supported monster-types, both have specific monster-types (Ancient Gear, Elemental Hero) that are well-supported, and both have Trap immunity.
The major difference is in the fact that Ancient Gear Engineer is immune to S/Ts in the Battle Phase, and therefore more protected. He also can destroy a S/T after attacking. However, because he is 5-Stars, is he really worth the added investment of getting him to the field if you have to tribute for him?
Well, Giant and Rat and Last Will help you get around that. You can even use Ancient Gear Castle and Ancient Gear Factory to avoid tributing for him. You can also then equip him with Ancient Gear Tank to make him 2100 ATK, or you can equip him with Ancient Gear Fist to allow him to destroy a Monster, and then a S/T too. Because he can destroy a S/T, sending him in first can help clear the way for your other attackers.
While he has many upsided, ultimately you have to decide whether he's worth it because he is 5-Stars and Wildheart is not. He's certainly not Wildheart's replacement, but he's far from a lesser version of Wildheart because of it.
Traditional: 1.5/5 - He's not LIGHT or DARK, and he's a tribute.
Advanced: 4/5 - Immunity in the Battle Phase, and S/T destruction.
Limited: N/A - Structure Deck only
