SD6-EN031 Nightmare's Steelcage

Here's another fun card. And it's a card I was wondering what it took so long to come out in USA. I mean, it is a card used in anime with Dummy human (possessed by Marik) vs Yugi where Marik was using Slifer The Sky Dragon. (Osiris.)

Anyway, let's see what it does.

Nightmare's Steelcage
Normal Spell

This card remains face-up on the field for 2 of your opponent's turns. No monsters can attack. Destroy this card during your opponent's 2nd End Phase after this card was activated.

So basically, for 2 turns, both you and your for cannot attack so it's a stall. But, it's really JUST 2 turns. And both you and your foe can't attack. Meaning it's really existing for burn/stall deck use. And for those cards, they already got Gravity Bind/LLAB. (Eek, they given them ANOTHER stall card.) But look, Gravity Bind/LLAB stays until it's broken by a card effect so in that sense, it stays longer then Steelcage. So it's not that great.

And for a non-stall card, his big brother Swords of Revealing Light is way better. It stalls for 3 of your turns instead of 2, and you can STILL attack. Soo... yeah... not that great. Add this card if you need even more stalls in a burn deck after you packed yourself SoRL/Gravity/LLAB/Scapegoat/Messenger... yeah... nice but not that nice.

The only way that this card might be used is that it's a stall card that's Normal Spell. Meaning in the new SOI card Silent Insect can't negate this unlike Gravity/LLAB/Messenger... but like I said, you still have SoRL and Scapegoat.... And we all know Silent Insect is just "maybe" side-deckable and that's it....

------

I give it a 3 out of 10

What does this mean? Just run SoRL that's what I mean.

Unless of course, your deck isn't built around attacking. I plan on running two to three in my Jank Engine. Burn decks could benefit greatly from this card, especially since they aren't know for there attack ability. From that perspective, it gets a 8 out of 10 in my book. It only looses two point for being Continuous and limited to two turns. ;)

10 / 10 in the right deck.

You guys did see the episode of the Quiet One vs Yugi, right? Now THAT was the proper way to use Nightmare's Steelcage. Quiet One needed time for Slifer to grow, and he needed Yugi to stay away, yet he ALSO needed to eventually be able to attack. So Nightmare's provided temporary stalling. And it isn't restricted, so that gives it an advantage over swords.

But what I'm saying is.

SoRL/Gravity/LLAB/Messenger all last way longer then Nightmare's Steelcage.

So in that sense, it's not that great. I'm saying there are so many better stall cards already that out-shine this card.

Yeah, the only advantage is that it have no restrictions. But max your SoRL/Gravity/LLAB/Messenger first IMO before you pack this.

And if there is one thing that this card IS better then Gravity/LLAB/Messenger, is that this card stops all except cards that are immune to spell cards. There are cards that runs under the bridge of Gravity/LLAB/Messenger, against those cards, this card is the remedy.

But even with that, it's a rare case, and thus I'll still give it a 3 out of 10.

And yes, I did watch the anime show where this card made appearance and the stall used to pull out Slifer. (I mentioned it in the review.)

Nightmare's Steelcage would go really well in a Horus or Silent Swordsman deck too... as neither of those are affected by any spells.... so IMO, besides stall, it can be utilized in those decks as well providing some necessary protection for the lesser LVs, like Horus LV6 at only 2300 atk and Silent LV5 .... .. know what I mean vern ........

Well, I disagree that there are better cards. One is only better than the other depending on what you are trying to accomplish. In a deck like mine, they are a suppliment to what I already have. I hate being whiddled away by Oscar Myer Weenies while my Gravity Bind does nothing to stop him. Meanwhile my Lava Golem's 1000 points of damage pale in comparison to the damage my opponent's two Mataza the Zappers are doing while his The A. Forces sits there and laughs at me.
Looking at your deck builds though, I see your an attack kind of guy. You focus on finishing the game as fast as possible, even going for the OTK. Nothing wrong with that. Naturaly, anything that doesn't give you a open window of advantage wouldn't be all that great to you. But players like me, we like to drag the game out. You go for field/card advantage, whereas I'll go for making all your advantage meaningless. I think the game goes too fast curently, and anything that can make my opponent sit around and do nothing is wonderful to me. This card is really a matter of perspcetive.

Long time stall

Being able to run 3 copies of this is good. Fits in well with Exodia and Final Countdown decks, where frankly, LP (as long as it is positive) really doesnt matter. I can certainly imagine it in a few burn decks also.

Whilst this isnt a card to fit into most aggro style decks (unlike SoRL), it works very well in others.

Well actually if you play it in your main phase 2 then you are only stopped for one turn. It ends in his second end phase. So in that respect it is different.

Each one of the stall cards has there little niche that they fill.

G Bind / LLAB - over level 4 and Restricted to 2
Messenger - over 1500 ATK and Pay cost
Steelcage - everybody and Free

With more duelists sidedecking Wildheart, Royal Decree and in general S/T removal this adds to the arsenal of the stall deck.

I use a balance of all of them that way I will draw some type of stall when ever one gets removed.
