Can I play Shallow Grave if my opponent has a monster in the graveyard that can be special summoned by S.G.'s effect but my opponent does not have an open monster zone (i.e. five monsters already on the field, or all zones blocked by ground collapse?

No you cannot. The same way you couldn't play it if all of your zones are filled.
