Slayers...Not All They're Cracked Up to Be

The other day, I got this bright idea to make a deck made up almost completely of Slayers. It seemed like a grand idea. Breaking shields while being able to kill any Blocker or threat that stands in my way sounds like the perfect strategy. Oh, how wrong I was.

So there I was, playing against my friends in a friendly multi-player game. Normally, I'm considered to be the undisputed champion of multi-player Duel Masters, but not this day. I got my butt handed to me on a platter. Then I tried my luck in singles with similiar result. After assessing what happened, I came to the following conclusions.

Slayer Strengths:
-Can take out any and every creature in the game no matter the power of the opposing creature.
-Relatively low cost let's them hit the Battle Zone in no time.
-They're Darkness Civ which means you can easily splash in lots of creature kill spells like Terror Pit and Death Smoke.
-There's a lot of them. Diversity is always good.
-Blockers. Some newer Slayers also have the Blocker ability.

Slayer Weaknesses:
-Low power makes them easy kills for cheap Blockers. What good is a Slayer that won't be able to stick around to kill the intended target?
-None of them come with the Double Breaker ability to help take out shields faster.
-Although 3-drop Slayers are nice, most opponents will have a low cost Blocker out ready to intercept the attack.
-They're sitting ducks for low-cost Fire spells like Crimson Hammer and Spastic Missile.

Slayers make for great utility cards, but are hardly worth the effort of theming a deck around them. If your intention is to kill an opponent's tapped creature, you're probably better off using a good Power Attacker instead. Slayers aren't bad cards, just make sure you use them sparingly.

I never understood the appeal of Slayers because I never used them. I mean they kill a monster when they attack or are or something.

It's all in the timing that you use them- They can tip the game in your favor, but sometimes they can be a dead top deck or just unwanted at the time.

However, the Survivor that passes the Slayer ability on can be deadly-- especially if you have the Unblockable survivor out, and its tapped--- the opponent is almost forced to atk it, if they don't have any creature destruction spells.

Forgive my lack of monster names--- It has been awhile since I last played--- I remembering them as I read-
