smashing grond and fissure!!!!!

They only target a specific ATK of a monster, Not the monster itself. The choice is made once you find the Highest/Lowest ATK value. This is not considered Targetting. Hope this helps you out.....

so lord of D. cant save dragon from effect of smashing ground,
and i cant use Riryoku Field to save my monster!? :argh:

That's correct, Lord of D. will not save other dragons from the effect of Fissure or Smashing Ground.

Riryoku Field will not save them either for the same reasons as Lord of D.

targeting or 'the card is specifically designating a target' is only true, if you can choose the monster your card will affect.

You can't do so with Smashing Ground or Fissure, the card searches its target itself.
It's not your decision, which monster will be destroyed.

Another very interesting example is the Penguin Soldier.
If you choose only ONE monster for its effect, then its specifically designating a target!
If you choose two monsters to be sent back to their owners hands, it is NOT considered specifically designating a target!

Because a card is only considered 'specifically designating a target' if it targets EXACTLY ONE card
(this is the reason why Raigeki, Tribe-Infecting Virus' effect and so on are NOT considered 'targeting effects').

Let's work with this theory:

Let's say they have 5 monsters on the field and your penguin soldier's effect is active, which monsters do we send back?

Does Penguin Soldier randomly send back monsters?

No.

Does the controller of Penguin Soldier choose who gets bounced back?

Yes.

According to what you are saying, PS is an indescriminate effect since it lacks the "targetting" quality that other cards like Change of Heart have. Unfortunately, if the card says "choose," "designate," or even "target" the player must actually pick 2 monsters of their preference to be the recipients of the effect. This would make Penguin Soldier a targetting effect that Lord of D. can negate (should it target dragons).

Regardless of the number of monsters sent back by Penguin Soldier, they are all considered targeting. The only thing relevant in regards to Penguin Soldier is for cards like Chaos Command Magician which is only protected if Penguin Soldier only targets *1* monster. If Penguin Soldier were flipped and all the monsters on the field were Dragon Types (due to DNA Surgery) and Lord of D. was on the field, Penguin Soldier could not choose any monsters.

Yeah... I must have gotten some kinda confused when I last read about targets.... and might have gotten something very wrong...
there's for sure a difference between specifically designating ONE target and A target...

sorry for the confusion...
but thanks a lot, you helped me a lot, cause I learned something new to me!
