Smashing Ground - Does it affect face-down monsters?

"Smashing Ground" states "Distroy 1 monster with the highest DEF on your opponent's side of the field." It does not state if that card is face-up or face-down like other cards of this type. If it affects face-down cards and you have more than 1 card on the field, do you have to show your opponent the face-down card to verify that the card destroyed had the highest DEF? We may have an errata problem here. Does anyone know for sure what the correct ruling would be on this card?

the ruling states that a face-down monster has no ATK, DEF or effect unless it is flipped. So smashing ground wouldnt work on face-doen monsters since they do not have an ATK or DEF. The only exception is big shield gardna with its "While its face-down" spell negation effect. But thats the only exception.
