Spear Cretin - Flip Affect

Ok, so I've been wondering about this for a while. The text on Spear Cretin is, "FLIP: After this card is flipped, when it is sent to the Graveyard, both you and your opponent select 1 monster from your respective Graveyards and Special Summon it on the field in face-up Attack Position or face-down Defense Position (no Tribute is required for monsters of Level 5 or more)." So, does this mean, that you can summon Spear Cretin back in face down position again and therefore keep using the effect? Granted, this would mean that your opponent would continue to get monsters until they have all 5 slots filled. Also, could you Flip Summon Spear Cretin, then sacrifice him for a Tribute Summon, and his affect would activate? I'm assuming yes b/c it is an affect that is activated when it is sent to the Graveyard AFTER it's been flipped, but there is no timing stipulation for how long after its been flipped and then sent to the Graveyard....I don't know if that made any sense....:D

The same as I. This situation comes up every weekend, and I always forget the ruling on it, and make up what I thought I heard in my head multiple times. I randomely have been thinking about it too.

My thoughts on the matter are simple. By battle, it can't select itself because it's being sent to the graveyard, something I've learned from "Night Assailant". I would, however, believe it can get another monster, such as a different grave copy of cretin, or any other monsters that can be Special Summoned from the Graveyard for that matter.

Anyway, "Spear Cretin" has is mandatory. So yes, if tributed after flipped, it's effect will activate.

Your simply not allowed to choose Spear Cretin for his own effect, but you can get a different copy already in the Graveyard. See this Judges List post. Note, though, that it doesn't matter if it's sent by battle or anything else. It still can't select itself.

It's two effects. The FLIP is the first effect that sets up the Trigger Effect of when he's sent to the Graveyard. This is why you can use Divine Wrath against either effect. See this post as well.

Awesome - that's what I wanted to know. Thanks!

PS - I'm a relatively new duelist - I've had cards for a while, but never really dueled according to rules or Advanced lists. It was always just for fun, but now I'm looking to enter the Regionals or the Shonen Jump Championship. I think I'll post my deck to see if I can get any feedback.

It's funny how the rulings state that Spear Cretin cannot select itself after it is sent to the graveyard but when Grandmaster of the Six Samurai is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, he can select himself to return to the hand. I guess that is BKSS...
