I need help in finding out if this move is legal or not.

I have a face down Staunch Defender trap card and a face down A Hero Emerges trap card on the field, and no monsters. The only card in my hand is a blue eyes white dragon. My opponent has three face up gemeni elves on his side of the field and he declares an attack (he has no other cards in his hand or on the field). I want to activate Staunch Defender and chain A Hero Emerges to it to bring out my Blue Eyes. Is this legal? Can I activate Staunch Defener when at the time of activivation I have no monsters on the field, but I will have a monster once the chain resolves completely?

I would appreciate any input, thanks.

Staunch Defender picks a mosnter at activation. But even if it didn't you would still need a monster on the field to activate it.

To illustrate: You may Not activate Dark Hole when there is no monster on the field. Even if you have the intent of chaining your Call of the Haunted to bring back a Witch of the Black Forest to have it destroyed and to get its effect; you may not activate it when there is no monster on the field.
