I have a face down Swarm of Scarabs, and my opponent attacks it. Do I get the effect.

Effect reads: You can flip this card into face-down defense position once per turn during your main phase. When this card is flip summoned, destory 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field.

Nope. "Swarm of Scarabs" must be Flip-summoned only in order to get the effect. Merely flipping the card face up won't do it.

Right, a Flip Summon is a specific manual event. But a "flip" is a generalzation. Many things flip a monster (attacks, effects, and summons) but a Flip Summon is a specific type of a Flip.
