Yes you may. It's not like The Shallow Grave where you both have to have at least 1 when you activate the card. So in this case you get the perk without the downside.
Just to elaborate on why. "The Shallow Grave" is an effect that you are 'choosing' to activate. "Spear Cretin"s effect is being forcibly activated when it is sent to the Graveyard after being flipped face-up. You aren't 'choosing' to activate it.
