UDE Judge Workshops
Since starting in 2004, the judge program has been in constant development here in the UK. For a while, we relied on judges with good rules knowledge to carry the majority of events that are run in the UK. With the introduction of the Pharaoh Tour and the expansion of City and Regionals to include more areas than before, the need for a consistent standard of judging is as important as ever.
However, the resources needed to achieve this goal have been few and far between. As a result players are starting to suffer from this lack of consistency. Good players are receiving vastly different quality of tournaments and rulings. Bad players are taking advantage of judges.
We are in urgent need to re-train our higher level judges in an attempt to bring into line the quality of tournaments being run and the sort of services players should receive.
A clear example of the difference in standards is the YuGiOh National Championships, where attitudes and skill of the judges we used differed greatly. Our goal is to make the set of 2007 judges look towards a common set of goals and utilise their individual skills to achieve it. However, to create this collection of judges, we need a sub-set of judges who can implement and more importantly teach these skills to their local community (trainee judges, store owner, local champions etc).
Where are the workshops:
There are two workshops in November:
Saturday 18 November, The Towers, Botany Avenue, Mansfield, NG18 5NG (10am-4pm)
Sunday 26 November at the Winnersh Community Centre, Reading (10am "“ 4pm)
You only need to attend one of the workshops as they have identical contents.
Who is attending the workshop?
The workshop is by invitation only. Most judges that have worked for UDE's top events are invited. Organisers of Premier Events are asked to send along their top judges to one of the workshops. All other active judges can apply for an invitation on condition they obtain a letter of recommendation from a Premier Event Organiser that is in good standing with UDE.
About the workshop
This workshop is not about the hard and fast game rulings. We are not planning to go through an FAQ of the most common rulings that we think you will encounter in your tournament. You should already know this.
This workshop will cover the following topics:
1. Your overall role as a judge: what does being a judge actually mean?
2. Your basic interaction with your surroundings: Organisers, fellow judges, spectators and of course the players.
3. The penalty guidelines: a complete guide.
4. Dealing with scenarios: The most common TCG related scenarios and how to deal with them.
5. When to be the bad guy: There are some things that just are not acceptable in a TCG community.
6. How to pass on your skills: Because there is only so much one person can do"¦
Applications are open now....
