What is wrong with this Horus Deck?

Hello

My son has been playing a Horus Deck for almost a year and while he has done OK at the local contents, he rarely winis more than 7-15 duels and he 'almost' beats the better players but not quite. Everyone says he has a great deck but we cannot work out why he does not have the edge over many other decks which just seem to overwhelm him.

Here is his latest effort which won him 7 duels again today. Why can't he push ahead and win more? Is there something fundamentally wrong with the deck?

HORUS DECK (43 cards)

Monsters (20)
3 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4
2 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6
1 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8
1 x Dark Ruler Ha Des
1 x Jinzo
1 x Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys
2 x Hand of Nephthys
1 x D.D. Warrior Lady
1 x Reflect Bounder
1 x Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 x Gemini Elf
1 x Exiled Force
1 x Magician of Faith
1 x Cyber Jar
1 x Mad Dog of Darkness
1 x Man-Eater Bug

Spells (14)
2 x Level Up!

maybe you need to focus more on Horus so...

- Dark Ruler
- Phoenix
- 2 Hand of N.
- Gemini Elf
- Man-Eater Bug
- Mad Dog of Darkness

+ 2 Spirit Reaper
+ 1 Newdoria
+ 1 Drillroid / 1 Mystic Swordsman LV2
+ 3 Nimble Momonga

- 1 Level Up!
- 1 Level Modulation
- 1 Cost Down
- 1 Lighting Vortex

+ 2 Messenger of Peace
+ 1 Smashing Ground
+ 2 Wave-Motion Cannon
+ 1 Scapegoat

- 2 Drop Off
- 1 Ceasefire
- 1 Waboku
- 1 Magic Cylinder
- 1 Bottomless
- 1 Sakuretsu

+ 2 Royal Decree
+ 1 Dust Tornado
+ 1 Compulsory

I disagree with Amplifier cause it terribly weakens Jinzo.

I see only one fundamental flaw in this deck, and that is the ratio of Horuses. Horusie. Horeese. Hori. Horus's. :p Lose one LV4 and put in a LV8. You'd be astounded how easy it is to level those Horuses, since your opponent can't Smashing Ground them or anything.

All other changes are minor, and have already been suggested.

I see exactly the problem. This deck is very imbalanced. Ina Horus deck, the only tributes you play are Horus, and that's it. If he can almost beat teh "goof" players with this thing, imagine what he'll do witha Horus deck that's 10 times better. Here's an idea of what a balanced horus deck should look like:

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8
Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 6 X 2

Breaker the Magical Warrior
Injection Fairy Lily
Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 4
D.D. Assailant X 3
Blade Knight X 2
Beserk Gorilla X 2
Drillroid
Mystic Swordsman LV 2
DDWL
Exiled Force
Sangan
MOF

Dark Hole
Reinforcement of the Army X 2
Brain Control
Snatch Steal
Premature Burial
Heavy Storm
Giant Trunade
MST
Nobleman of Crossout
Swords of Revealing Light
Smashing Ground X 2
Scapegoat

Torrential Tribute
Call of the Haunted
Sakuretsu Armor X 3
Royal Decree X 2

Take THAT to the tourney and see how well you do, lol. Now if you don't have all the necessary cxards, just get the deck as close to this build as possible.

Horus Deck

Hello again

Hmmmm... Interesting suggestions. However, please clarify the following points:

Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys
What is wrong with this card or is it just 'wrong' in this deck? Why? It is relatively easy to special summon and has a great return effect from the graveyard. The Hand of Nephthys help to summon this card of course.

Dark Ruler Ha Des
This card also has a great effect so why does it not fit? It is almost like a staller (his effect) with a good attack.

Smashing Ground
What is it with this card? Why is everyone raving about it? Is it because cards with high defence are good to get rid of due to their stalling ability and their normally-associated high attack value?

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8
I can see the benefit of adding another one of these. Although with Level Modulation and/or Monster Reincarnation, we may still get away with one. We'll see if we can get another.

In the end, my 10yr old son loves the look and play of the big name cards. Therefore, we will try some of the above suggestions but in the end, we may put up with a few losses to offset playing with an awesome looking deck.

Thanks again

1) Nothing wrong with the phoenix...it's just not for this deck
2) Same deal with Ha Des....great card in it's own right, but not for a horus deck
3) smashing is a great card, if you can lay your hands on one. monster removal is big these days it seems :icon_roll
4) an extra horus 8 is a good idea...balance out the ratio of horus levels in your deck

Horus Getting Better

Hi

Some questions on the latest response from ChaosEmperor12 - certainly more along the lines of what we were hoping for.

Apprentice Magician
I guess this is here as a searcher for Magician of Faith, Hand of Nephthys and another Apprentice - sounds superb. The only card it can put a counter on is Breaker so its 2nd effect would not be worth anything

Marauding Captain
Is this only here to allow you to special summon another monster? That would also be good for Sacred Phoenix or anything else actually.

Reflect Bounder
This is here as a block but we have been thinking of removing it. What is wrong with it? The effect seems great.

Sangan
With the changes you suggested, Sangan will now fit perfectly. It did not really have many targets with our original deck plan.

Other Changes
We will try the other changes and see how that goes. Thankyou very much. Once we try it and see how it goes, I will provide feedback - may be a little while as we collect the remaining few cards.

If there's anyone who has tinkered with Horus decks, it's me. Horus and phoenix are two very good and powerful cards, that's a given. But both really deserve their own decks, mixing the two won't turn out positive results. With that being said, I'll get on to the fixes:

- 1 x Dark Ruler Ha Des
Ha Des is good, there's no mistaking that, but one of the problems the deck seems to have is the amount of tributes. Too many will clog up your hand and will become a problem.

- 1 x Jinzo
I know, I know, Jinzo + LV 8 = Lockdown, but we can't have too many tributes remember? Besides, you could just go with Royal Decree, which is somewhat faster.

- 1 x Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys
No need to explain this as I've already stated why it needs to go in the beginning.

- 2 x Hand of Nephthys

- 1 x Reflect Bounder
Not many people run this card anymore. It can be easily countered and removed so he's gone.

- 1 x Gemini Elf
Definetely has a great ATK, but ATK alone just doesn't do it.

1 x Cyber Jar
This card can be good for you but can also give your opponent an advantage. This format, you want to make sure not to give your opponent advantage because once they have it, it's all over for you.

1 x Mad Dog of Darkness
See Gemini Elf

1 x Man-Eater Bug
There are better forms of removal in the game, MEB just doesn't cut it.

- 1 x Giant Trunade
Killing off Spells and Traps works best for this deck instead of just restting the field, allowing your opponent to gain back what they could have lost.

- 1 x Lightning Vortex
Lightning Vortex fell off when Sinsiter Serpent got banned and Night Assailant got restricted. Besides, Dark Hole > LV.

- 1 x Level Modulation
Remember what I said about not giving your opponent advantage? Well, this card basically does that. Picture this, you play Modulation. Your opponent draws 2 cards but you bring back LV 8. You then end your turn, and it goes to him and he summons one of the following: D.D. Assailant, or D.D. Warrior Lady, and kills off LV 8 again. Because you gave him +2 card advantage, he was able to get what he needed to kill LV 8.

- 1 x Cost Down
This was kinda good when you had all those tributes but since you don't, it's not really needed.

- 1 x Magic Cylinder
Really, there's nothing bad about this card. It can give a little LP advantage, but let's just kill the threat instead of delaying it. IF you want, you can add this in your sidedeck.

2 x Drop Off
Drop Off can work in favor of your opponent. Pot of Avarice decks and Bazoo decks are becoming more popular and they'll love this card. Side thse as well for other decks that might be of some nuisance.

- 1 x Ceasefire
Ceasefire has decreased in popularity since most of the good flip-effect monster have been restricted. (MoF, NA)

1 x Bottomless Trap Hole
Nothing wrong with this, side 2x.

1 x Waboku
Waboku is a sidedeck card you'll probably need against OTKs and FTKs.

Here's the final result:
Monsters (18)
3 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4
2 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6
1 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8
2 x D.D. Assailant
1 x D.D. Warrior Lady
1 x Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 x Exiled Force
1 x Sangan
2 x Spirit Reaper
1 x Magician of Faith
1 x Mystic Swordsman LV2
2 x Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive

Spells (13)
2 x Level Up!
1 x Mystical Space Typhoon
1 x Book of Moon
1 x Premature Burial
1 x Dark Hole
1 x Scapegoat
1 x Nobleman of Crossout
1 x Snatch Steal
1 x Heavy Storm
2 x Smashing Ground
1 x Swords of Revealing Light

Traps (9)
2 x Dust Tornado
1 x Call of the Haunted
1 x Torrential Tribute
3 x Sakuretsu Armor
2 x Solemn Judgment

If you have questions about the cards I added, just ask. I'd add why I added them but they can be easily explained if you check out the Pojo Card of the Day section and look at a couple of other good decks. I'm also tired from typing all of this lol. If you want, check out my Horus deck. it'll give you a look on what other Horus players use.

Pretty good advice there, But I would keep Level Modulation. I too have been playing a Horus deck forever and personally love having the ability to dump and reborn a Horus. True it gives your opponent an advantage as well, but what if they've just spent all the resources they have getting rid of your 2x Horus 8's already? Plus I'll only actiate when I KNOW it gives me the advantage, no mater the 2 cards they get.

I have also tried Phoenix/Horus, and it just doesn't work. I wanted it too, but I got smoked when I tried the combo.

With these changes, the deck might run a lot better than it already does. A good tactic with Horus decks is using Cyber Dragon's special summoning ability to help bring out Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6.

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 really isn't needed for Horus decks that are meant to be competitve. Another option is using Masked Dragon and Troop Dragon to help thin out the deck. Set a Masked Dragon, they attack it, get out another in defense then another, then go for Troop Dragon, then another Troop Dragon, the the last. It's a great stalling/deck thinning strategy to give you field presense as well.

Just some ideas after all. =)
