Why are people using Mystic Tomato's in their decks?

I'm reading the decklists of the Chicago Shonen Jump Tournament and I see some people are running mystic tomato's when they can only target like 1 or 2 useful cards.

For Example:

Dale Bellido

Monsters: 22
2 Zaborg the Thunder Monarch
2 Cyber Dragon
1 Jinzo
2 Magician of Faith
1 D.D. Warrior Lady
2 Mystic Tomato
2 Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive
2 Spirit Reaper
2 Chaos Sorcerer
1 Newdoria
1 Night Assailant
1 Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 Sangan
1 Tsukuyomi
1 Morphing Jar

The only cards that will help him are newdoria and sangan. He can target spirit reaper, night assailant, but why? They need to be face down for him to get the effects.

It can also target itself for swarm; it's DARK so it helps with Chaos Sorcerer and fits in with the whole Chaos theme.

So people want to bring out another mystic tomato when the first one dies? ... ok ... I'd rather use like a Kycoo or another spirit reaper or something like that. At least they have better effects. And they are both dark also.

So mystic tomato means deck thinning, dark, and decrease your lifepoints since they have to come in attack mode. Good monster.

The only card you mentioned that needs to face-down for it's effect is Night Assailant. Tomatoes support the overall theme of the deck. It's purpose is to go to the Graveyard and it has an effect that thins the deck out in the process. Combine them with the draw power of Dekoichi and Morphing Jar and the deck is sped up considerably. He can draw another Tomato, Newdoria, both Spirit Reapers, and his Sangan. If he needs to draw something just to prevent some damage he can, but ultimately he's just speeding his deck up. This is one the reasons Chaos is so popular still. The speed.

yep yep, like everybody said, deck thining. thats all. / speed. the speed is better cause you draw into spells you need instead of creatures.

It (like the other searchers) is field presence. When Tomato dies by battle, it can either replace itself or with another monster. You lose your Tomato, but replace it with another monster. All the while thinning your deck and dumping DARKS into your Graveyard for easy removal or revival.

There is one other reason its in the deck posted above. To have something to tribute for. That deck basically runs 5 tributes. 3 if you don't count the cyber dragons but I do because they can get stuck in your hand sometimes. If your able to keep monsters on the field then you don't have to worry about running that many tribute monsters.

Additionally, there is nothing wrong with using tomato (or any of the other searchers) to pull out a flip monster in face up attack position, if one thinks that the opponent will not do anything to it (this would be done when the searcher is the subject of the last attack). Assuming that the face up flip monster doesnt get disposed of (smashing ground etc) one can, then flip it face down with tsukuyomi or book of moon in order to get its flip.

Of course, normally one would have to wait for your next turn in order to summon tsukuyomi, but you could always combo with ultimate offerings in your opponents battle phase.

It makes perfect sense running Tomatoes. Why do you say that Sangan and Spirit Reaper need to be face-down for their effects to activate. I find that it is better to play Sangan face-up half the time because I know that my opponent has a NoC in his hand.

The monsters in bold and italics are the only monsters you would want to bring out. Why would you ever bring out a spirit reaper or a dekoichi or a night assailant in attack mode? And having tyukyomi in your hand is not an answer.

As English Chef mentioned, the use of Tsukuyomi and Book of Moon make it plausable to special summon flip effect monsters too...with that in mind the list looks like this for usable dark monsters. Now if you throw in Compulsory Evacuation Device...then you have added ability to reclaim a flip effect monster special summoned by Mystic Tomato.

IMO Giant Rat has a much broader array of searchable and usable face up attack position monsters...however, that doesn't fit well with most decks in the current format going light / dark.

2 Mystic Tomato
2 Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive
2 Spirit Reaper
1 Newdoria
1 Night Assailant
1 Sangan

Why not summon a Spirit Reaper in attack mode? Let's say your Mystic Tomato was just killed by your opponent's last monster that has not yet attacked. What would be the down side to summoning Spirit Reaper in attack mode? Or let's say that you only had 1 monster (Mystic Tomato) on the field and your opponent has two or more monsters to attack with, would you rather just take the attacks direct (sure the ATK strength isn't going to save you from much damage but you still have a monster on the field and you can turn him to defense during your own turn even if you didn't have Book of Moon ready to turn him into a little defensive wall. Maybe you have a set Tsukuyomi as your other monster now if your opponent attacks your face-down monster he has saved you from any more attacks this round. And just what about the other possibility you have another monster on the field and now your opponent has to choose between the easy shot at more life points by attacking Spirit Reaper or attacking the other monster that may be more of a threat if not dealt with now. Tomato Control has been around for way too long for anybody to be wondering why it would still be a useful card.

because gravekeepers spy only searches out gravekeepers..tomato can get ANYTHING DARK under 1500...its kinda like a swiss army knife...

A lot of people do. The tournament scene is littered with them. It isn't nearly as flexible as an elemental searcher though (outside of a gravekeeper deck) and it can't continually churn like the searchers or a Masked Dragon (flip effect means Gravekeeper's Spy #2 isn't going to be fetching anything else unless you Book of Moon, Tsukuyomi).

Spy has seen less play because NoC is back to 2. A tomato can be played face up to get around this. Even if it gets smashed you still keep the others in the deck. Plus it will still hit the graveyard for Chaos.

I guess tomato is okay. Suggesting the use of tomato because you have tsukyomi in ur hand is ridiculous. Thats so situational. The only good things it can target are newdoria, other tomatos, giant germs?,sangan, maybe sorta spirit reaper.

Not entirely- as far as I am aware, there are very few ways to get a flip effect card from your deck to the field f/d. Apprentice Magician is almost about it. Getting stuff from the graveyard can be done with spear cretin and the shallow grave, but from the deck is difficult. As such, use of tsukuyomi and book of moon with the 'elemental searchers' (including tomato) become valid choices, if one needs a f/d monster that badly. And as to situational- if one would consider this a useful tactic, then one would change ones deck in order to make it more likely.
Many flip effect monsters have game changing effects- cyber jar, morphing jar and fiber jar come immediately to mind. Magician of faith and mask of darkness can set you up for a win condition. The ability to search these out, when you need them, then flip them facedown should not be under rated.

Of course, there are other combos one can pull. As John danker says, earth monsters (via giant rat) have a lot more utility cards that are searchable compared to dark monsters- Injection fairy Lily, exiled force, rescue cat, gyaku-gire panda, E-hero wildheart, kinetic soldier, lv2 mystic swordsman, labyrinth wall etc... I find that using rat to summon labyrinth wall, waiting for the opponent to declare an attack on its 0 attack, then activating desert sunlight to be quite entertaining...
