Does Abyss Soldier target ?

Card Text
Discard 1 WATER monster from your hand to the Graveyard. Return 1 card on the field to the owner's hand. You can only use this effect once per turn, during your Main Phase.

I think it doesn't other wise there would stand Select and return 1 card...

It doesn't affect the entire field, it affect the one card that gets picked up.
Maybe you forget what the "entire field" means.

Both sides are affected when Abyss Soldier uses his effect. He can return ANY card. Your card, your opponents card, a field card, monster card, trap, etc. If that doesnt say "entire field", then I dont know what else does.

When I see a cards effect that states "opponents side of field", obviously that doesnt mean "my side", so it only affects ONE side of the field, and not the entire field.

Maybe you forget what "affect" means.

When you see a card that states opponents side of the field doesn't mean that it affects the opponent's side of the field.

If a card says return one card on the field to the owner's hand it affects one card, not the whole field, not a side of the field. It doesn't even affect the hand.

Abyss Soldier targets the card selected to be returned. That card can be any card on the field, so you have the choice of any card on the field. It doesn't affect the entire field; you only have the choice of any card on it.

Abyss Soldier's condition is that that targeted card is on the field.
Which means that I can select ANY card on the field, which again means I have the entire field to select a card from, which means that the ENTIRE field is open to his effect since no one card is immune unless it cant be affected by Monster Effects.

If I couldnt select "Field Spell Cards", then that would mean that I am limited to the cards I can choose, which means that I DO NOT have the entire field to choose one card from, so therefore it is not the entire field, but a portion.

It targets.

masterwoo0, I do see what you're saying, but it doesn't matter what your range is. You pick a target and you shoot it.

A targeting effect simply chooses a card at activation out of the multiple targets it can take. In this case, it just has a wide range. The fact that this target can be any card on the field is completely irrelevent.

It can only affect one card. It has many POSSIBLE targets, but must choose one.

Also, it still can't target the graveyard. :p

It is indeed a targeting effect. The fact that you can select any card has nothing to do with it. Penguin Soldier can select Monsters on either side of the field and it is most definetly a targeting effect. But for a more official answer

Bold text was added by me:
I can see that King Dragon is going to revive the "targeting" vs
"non-targeting" arguements we had over Lord of D. While the test "if the
player doesn't choose the monster, it's not considered targeting" works most
of the time, a simple list of targeting and non-targeting effects would be
most helpful.

So wait why does Trap Hole Target if Bottomless does not. Although i relize it is alot hard to normal summon 2 monsters at once a player can responde to a Trap Hole with a Ult Offering allowing him to normal summon another monster. In my eyes both monsters would be drstroyed being that is how the Bottomless ruling goes.

I think the monster you summonsed first is destroyed and send to the graveyard because it targets. When it resolves it destroys the targeted monster (if it's still on the field if it isn't Trap Hole fizzled).
