Adults in Yu-Gi-Oh!

What I gleaned from kingpin's post was that people in general should recognize that when they have limited knowledge of a subject, thy should stop and think before the make statements about a subject and, at least, acknowledge the fact that their preconceptions are just that, preconceptions.
True enough, but there are people who do not want to show their ignorance, and/or perhaps cannot tell that what they have are preconceptions. It's possible, and certainly true with the first point. So we're stuck with people who are too proud to admit their inferiority, and/or don't recognise that adults playing a children's card game is a legitimate subject instead of just an oddity that shouldn't be happening.

What is this "noon" you speak of?
Something I'd like to exist only on the other side of. Unfortunately the rest of the world doesn't think that way.

The giveaway was not Yu-Gi-Oh! alone, but part of a larger group of giveaways from different toy companies. The woman in question was actually about to hand me the card, then stopped to ask me if it was for a kid. Me, in my blasted persistence to answer things honestly just said no, not for a minute thinking that this would be a problem. She suddenly drew the cards back and started giving me problems. Bottom line is, what purpose does it serve for a store to turn away a potential customer, based on what was clearly a personal bias, not a store policy? I know this, because other folks around the country got their giveaways just fine.

Question: how much money do kids spend on toys? Compare this to how much money adults spend on kids on toys...
Hey, even compare this to how much money adults spend on adult toys? (sports cars, harleys, wide screen TVs etc...)

A sales assistant should know a consumer with money when she sees one...

Yes, but you should know that knowledge is relative. Even the greatest minds ever are still almost entirely ignorant about the Universe. Would you call them ignorant? Well, maybe, but only if they were out of earshot.

Honestly, I would tell that person to their face... well, first I would praise their position, and let them know that I respect them, then i would call them ignorant... hahhha ..... being a "great mind" they would appreciate the fact that I would have the respect to say it in front of them rather than secretly... and IF they happen to be offended I would hand them a Note Card that says simply.....

ig·no·rant –adjective
1.lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man.
2.lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics.
3.uninformed; unaware.
4.due to or showing lack of knowledge or training: an ignorant statement.

Then I would challenge him/her to a game of Yugioh, or chess .... just for fun....

(of course in person, it would run a bit smoother, but u get the gist of it)

Excuse me for bumping a few old threads on here. I am only replying to whatever I find interesting that has been posted whilst I was away.

Very nice article, Digital Jedi.

In my country, only a few adults play & mostly with their children at tournaments. It is very rare to see one anyway.
I am 44 years old & the "closest" duelist in terms of age to me that I know of is 25. All the rest are between 10-16.

I have found that young boys can become very "protective" about this game & the amount of "ageist" slurs I have had to tolerate, both online & off has been quite phenomenal. If you beat them, they become even more angry & protective. Most would rather be beaten by a "baby" than one who has "one foot in the grave" (the comment that I hear most often).
I think that ever since Austin Kulman won worlds, it seems like it has just perpetuated the myth that you have to be a child to play/succeed at this game.

I have been playing for 4 years now & started when my eldest daughter was 16 & my youngest daughter was 12. We all started at about the same time, when we were looking for an alternative to the Pokemon TCG. I was annoyed to discover that my "Wigglytuff" was not allowed to "Do the Wave" anymore & I could forget about "Hitmonlee's" "Stretch Kick".
(I made a deck designed to take out all "Benched" Pokemon & that was my "Win Condition").

I saw the Yugioh! anime on the TV & immediately thought "Is there really a game like that? If so, it must have no rules..I like that".
My eldest daughter went out & bought the Kaiba Starter that same day, gave me the Rulebook & history was born.
I bought the Yugi Starter for myself & a Pegasus one for my youngest, then I bought a Promo box of IOC, pulled BOTH Envoys & sorta went "Screw the Rules...I have Chaos". This was well before the Oct 2004 banlist & before I even knew what a Chaos Deck was. Suffice to say, I also got some Chaos Sorcerers, a Dimension Fusion, Hysteric Fairies etc & then I cannibalised the Yugi starter to make a deck that could beat both of them every time.

I guess I am just a "kid at heart". I think I have just about finished every game on every console ever invented & it all started with "Pong" & Football Trading Cards.
I was/am still a huge anime freak, first anime I ever watched was Kimba The White Lion, then Astro Boy, Battle of the Planets (skipped a few years) then DB, DBZ, Pokemon, Sailor Moon (which I hated), Digimon, Card Captors (I also disliked), Yugioh & finally Neon Genesis Evangelion (my fave of the lot). I should really get around to watching Naruto & Inuyasha one of these days.

There seems to be a "social stigma" involved with adults doing this. Face it, when I was a teenager, all we had was: Football Cards, Playing Cards, Chess/Checkers, Board Games (Bored Games), Space Invaders, Rubik's Cube, Jacks & Marbles.
Kids of today have more than I could have ever dreamed of & in a way, I envy them. In another 30 years, I shudder to think what there will be..holographic interractive pets?, Virtual Reality games? etc.

Now, I get told off by kids for being too "mature" & adults for being too "immature" when it comes to gaming.
Meanwhile, I watch all the 80-90 year olds going out in their "Sunday Whites" for their friendly game of "Lawn Bowls" or see them all at the club on "pension day" playing Bingo/House.
Will I be like that if I get to their age? no freaking wai. I'll prolly just walk on by with my holographic pet dinosaur & wave to them.

When kids tell me to "gtfo of the game" because it is "theirs", I tell them I enjoy playing Yugioh! & if they can't handle that, then that's their problem.
When adults tell me "aren't you too old to be playing that"? I tell them "Does it really annoy you? If not, then MYOB if so, i'll just associate myself with different adults, cya".
My parents disagree with me playing, but as long as I don't buy any boosters while they are around, hide my cards, don't mention it, or go on Forums whilst they are staying with me, they never mention it. It's sort of an "agreement" we have...they just "don't wanna know" & I'm cool with that.

I visit here, because there are more "mature" gamers to discuss issues with.
I try to do that on Pojo or DGZ...forget it.
We are indeed fortunate that such a great site like City of Gamers exists for this purpose. =)

And usually when someone tells me "gtfo", my standard response is...."What?" :p

If anyone ever told me to leave because this game is theirs, I'd remind them this game is designed, maintained, produced, sold and distributed by people between the ages of 30-40. In addition to all the old cats that judge, run the shops they buy cards from and maintain almost all the major Yu-Gi-Oh! forums, not to mention Netrep, Deck Studio™™ and RONIN™™. Oh, and lets not forget all the those old timers that drove their jobless behinds to the tournament to being with.

But to be honest, I've not run into that much from children. Not once. My only issues have been with people who limit my access to the tings I enjoy due to their preconseptions. Though that may have to do with the fact that I'm a guy living in the states. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've only seen a handful of documentaries about Australia and the social structure there, and what I saw suggested that women are still having a hard time getting equal respect there. Mind you, this was nearly two decades ago I saw this, so things may have changed greatly since then.

Even if that's not the case, I do know for a fact that young people emulate what their parents do, and what the worst of their friends do. It aggravates me to hear that children would treat an adult that way, but at the same time, I can't help but pity them too. How much more difficult social interaction is going to be, when they have to grow up and interact in a world that doesn't respond well to "stfu gtfo", or, heck, even understands what that means.

You are correct. Playing Yugioh in Australia is a whole different ball game.
Women are still "second class citizens" over here & to be female and old(er) than the average duelist, immediately puts one at a "double disadvantage". If only I had $1 for every time I have been called "Ms Michael Jackson"...

People (my international duelist friends) are amazed that I am even still in the game, after all the flack that I have copped from it.
Do you want to know who hacked/cracked my PC? about 4 kids (14-16 yrs old) from my local metagame.
They found out my MSN address & then sent it off to 4chanpartyvan & ebaumsworld to get every hacker on the net onto me, in a vain/immature/stupid attempt to drive me out of the game, because I am too old (in their opinion).

A lot of kids won't even trade with me, no matter how much they desperately need a card I have.
I think that the only reason I am still here, is because I refuse point blank to let babies like that win.
I could tell you many things, from e-mail death threats, to cut up Fiend cards being sent to me in the mail...

I have been to the police & you know what they said to me? "kids will be kids" and "if you don't like it, quit" (I have also heard that many times before too).

Now, these last two posts are not to be taken as a rant/whine whatsoever. I am just telling people the truth. If I didn't love the game as much as I do, I would have left ages ago.
If I was also not fed up with the attitude, I would not be looking to learn Magic the Gathering, for a bit of "respite" than anything else.

I also envy you guys that live in the USA & Europe, where people are generally more tolerant about such things.

Btw, I love my latest toy. Thanks DJ. (I'll continue to annoy people with it until the novelty wears off):D

Wow, Necro, I had no idea....thanks for sharing. Hey, you are always welcome here. Can't have too many Aussies; unless they're the Thunder 'til ya Chunder blokes (party 'til you puke)! My eldest and I have always wanted to visit down under (her for the accents, me for Olivia Newton-John--just to talk, I swear!!). Now I know to keep my cards tightly locked up for the trip.

Seriously, though, I expect that these issues come form the idea of male machismo and rugged outback vissage that is expected of men there, no? Remnants of its birth. Still, as I have said before on this very thread, change comes slowly. But it will come to the patient and persistant trailblazers who do their thing regardless of what society says. Koodos to you Necro!!

Even so, maybe we can work up some witty banter with you to shut them up. Not to antagonize them further, but by getting them to think. You know, like..."You don't need to feel threatened by my years of experience. I promise not to treat you any different from any of the adults I play, unless you want me to take it easy on you." Or, "Yes, I'm old. But my doctor said card games like these are good for my mental health. You do want me to stay mentally healthy don't you?" --this one works better when you have a bushy beard and look like the unibomber, like me. I don't know. Maybe these will just inflame them more. We wouldn't want that.

Around here, as you have read, it is largely adults that have issues. Kids and teens really (sadly) don't see us as much of a threat. And that means that when we do play, quite a few think it is pretty cool. I've become like a bit of a father figure to a lot of the guys (some call me Chuck Norris--okay, I'll take that). Spending time encouraging and supporting them, loving on them like my own kids. But, it sounds quite different over there. I wish I could come and take a crack at breaking down those barriers. I love a good challenge. If we ever do make it there, we will have to look you up. Then maybe you could drive me out to Olivia's ranch:D .

Thanks for your support matey, yeah Australia is full of rednecks.
I don't know Olivia Newton John personally, let alone getting "physical" in any way. :D
I have also tried to "break down the barriers" but its difficult from a subjective standpoint.
There's also the fact, that I stopped attending tournaments due to this (& financial matters) & now they just call me a "woos".
Yes, I tried putting in a complaint to the TO & Judge..the reply: "one would think that you would be mature enough to simply ignore such behaviour"
They think I am already insane, so there's no convincing them otherwise.
So, in the end, I just went "screw it" & decided to avoid them. I only wish that worked both ways. Now, I just play casually with a few friends.
In the end, it just becomes...idiots + internet anonymity = bloody moronic idiots. This forum makes a very pleasant change from the norm. :)

Now that you have a new computer, maybe we can join you on YVD more often. Dillie-O is testing some set files for YVD generated from the RONIN library. Maybe we can get you to join in on the Beta testing.

I wouldnt actually call it a "new" computer.
What I would call it, is a piece of old jank I've had sitting in my garage for ages.
When I said "new" PC, I meant "different" PC. lol
Pentium 3..192 MB RAM..Win XP (counterfeit)..takes 3 minutes to load each CoG page...
Can't update IE6, cant update MP10..YVD won't work (not to mention Hamachi).
I must wait til I win lotto/get job first..yada..
Thanks for the offer, DJ. Im surprised that this thing even does what it's doing now.
I'll ring ya when I'm rich.
