I'm not sure, actually. The last part of Ancient Gear Castle suggests that you are allowed to only Tribute the card on its own with its counters, and no other monsters. However, the first part of that quoted sentence suggests you could possibly use it as only one of the two required Tributes for Ancient Gear Golem.

No idea, sorry.


A related question: could you use two Ancient Gear Castles, each with one counter, as Tributes to Summon Ancient Gear Golem? It all depends on whether an Ancient Gear Castle must be the whole of the Tribute, or could be just part of it.

If you only have 1 counter, that means that you have (for instance of the case) 1 monster, if you have another monster plus this card, that makes it for 2 monsters "per say"

Ancient Gear Golem is an 8 level star monster meaning you need 2 monsters... so yes you can use Ancient Gear Castle with only one counter and another monster to summon it.

So, can I use a monster that is already on the field and this card with one
counter to summon Ancient Gear Golem?

You cannot mix "Ancient Gear Castle" with the Tribute of a monster.

To use the effect of "Ancient Gear Castle" to Summon "Ancient Gear
Golem" it must have 2 or more counters.
