i was looking at the b.e.s mosters and i was wondering if anyone could tell me if they use a speciffic type of counter of af they can use any type of counters?

They generate generic counters. Not a Spell Counter, A-Counter, Chronicle Counter or anything generated from another card. So, for example, you wouldn't be able to move counters to B.E.S Crystal Core using Pitch-Black Power Stone.

A card like Counter Cleaner affects all Counters, regardless of what kind of Counters they are. Cards that specify "Spell Counters" or "A-Counters" or "Vemon Counters" can ONLY use those exact types Counters. You cannot use B.E.S. Counters for, say Mega Ton Magical Cannon (because it uses Spell Counters, NOT any Counters).

"Counters" are considered different to "Spell Counters", "Vemon Counters", etc. etc. They're completely incompatible. Ideally the older cards (the ones that just say "Counters") should say they use specific types of Counters (e.g. Catapult Counter for Dark Catapulter, etc.). But they don't. Just remember that they're all different.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing with regard to counter names, and suggested that in my old Errata thread. I errated Magic Reflector to say "Reflector Counters". Which mechanically wouldn't change a thing.

The naming of counters is something that Magic: The Gathering has been doing for a long time, as well as Vs. Yu-Gi-Oh! only started doing that in recent years, but for all intents and purposes, the mechanics never changed.

ack...

Counter are a headache...

No wonder most people don't use them...

Anyway...

Just to confirm...

The monster special summoned by "Boss Rush" does not gain counters, right?

Wait...

You're confusing me again

XD

Don't they have to be tribute summoned to gain counters?

Or is it the same to tribute summoned and to normal summoned?

*ahem*

A Tribute Summon is any Normal Summon that involves Tributing 1 or more monsters (very usually Level 5 or higher monsters). All Tribute Summons are Normal Summons, but not all Normal Summons are Tribute Summons.

Consider Level Conversion Lab. If you make your B.E.S. Crystal Core a Level 3 monster, you can Normal Summon it without Tribute. This means it's NOT a Tribute Summon, but it still IS a Normal Summon. Since B.E.S. Crystal Core gains its Core Counters when it is Normal Summoned, it will STILL get its Core Counters even in this case.

The opposing example is Mobius the Frost Monarch. He needs to be Tribute Summoned in order to get his effect. If Level Conversion Lab has made him Level 3, you can certainly Normal Summon him, but you WON'T get his effect (because he wasn't Tribute Summoned).

B.E.S. Covered Core
Effect Monster (Machine / EARTH / 7 Stars / ATK 2500 / DEF 800)
When this card is Normal Summoned, put 2 counters on it. This card cannot be destroyed by battle. If this card attacks or is attacked, at the end of the Damage Step toss a coin and call it. If you call it wrong, remove 1 counter. If this card battles without a counter, destroy it at the end of the Damage Step.

Right. Simply put, Tribute Summons are Normal Summons that just cost more.

Besides, all the B.E.Ss say "When this card is Normal Summoned...", so being that it's 7*, there'd not be a lot of ways to get the counters on there if it wasn't the same thing.

Eh, there's nothing really wrong to consider the two distinct things, the only thing you have to consider is that a Tribute Summon is a Normal summon in a sense that you don't have any particular requirements to do so, except you need a monster to tribute.

I would advise to try and keep the two synonymous, personally. That way when you come across certain effects, you know the extent of what the effect can and cannot do. For instance, Ultimate Offering lets you pay 500 Life Points for an extra Normal Summon or Set. By definition, this means you can also pay to Tribute Summon or Set, because they are a kind of Normal Summon.

I think the best way to look at summons is that there are only two kinds. Normal and Special. This way you group them separately by their mechanical differences. Normal and Tribute Summons use up the same summon option once per turn and can only be conducted during a Main Phase. While Special Summons have no limitation per turn and can occur during any Phase of the game.
