battle damage

dimension wall:
You can only activate this card when your opponent declares an attack with a monster. Instead of you, your opponent takes the Battle Damage you would have taken as a result of this battle.

what exactly is battle damage?
1) Is it the damage a monster deals to a players life points (eg. My cyber dragon atks an atk pos don zaloog, battle damage = 700)?
2) Is it the total atk of the attacking monster?

A friend made me doubt because he stated that dimension wall basicly does the same thing as magic cylinder. I think not

any help is appreciated! thnx

The battle damage that Dimension Wall is talking about is the difference between the attacking monster's ATK and the defending monster's ATK.

In this case, it would be 700

The difference between Dimension Wall and Magic Cylinder is that Dimension Wall does NOT negate the attack. In this scenario, Don Zaloog would be destroyed by Cyber Dragon but the attacking player would take the 700 difference as damage to their lifepoints.

Battle Damage is the damage inflicted to to a player and a monster when two monsters engage in battle. That's why when Waboku reduces all Battle Damage to 0, neither the monster nor the player receive any damage. It's also the reason the monster will not be destroyed. One is Battle Damage inflicted to a monster, which determines whether the monster will be destroyed. The other is Battle Damage inflicted to a player's Life Points.

Dimension Wall specifically redirects the Battle Damage YOU would have taken as a result of this attack. It does not redirect or deflect or negate the Battle Damage your monster takes. Unlike Magic Cylinders, which specifically negates the attack, and then inflicts damage based on the attacking Monster's ATK stats.

One minor point DJ, two monsters don't have to battle for battle damage to happen, a direct attack is still considered battle damage....I'm sure you knew that already, just pointing it out so that others don't get the wrong impression.

That's why additional information is never a bad thing. I should have pointed that out. Good thing we don't lock threads when the wind blows around here.

all damage done in the battle phase done by an attacking monster is battle damage, unless interfered by an effect (i think it is a gravekeeper's monster that makes all its battle damage effect damage.)

(BTW: if an opponent directly attacks, you can activate dimension wall. it is still battle damage)

if i am wrong, please correct me, i am too young to be a judge.

Correct. (And your thinking of Gravekeeper's Vassal.)

But just like I did, there's one element you left out. Battle Damage isn't always inflicted by an attacking monster. It can also be inflicted by a defending monster onto an attacker and its owner. Which is why Waboku can sometimes be used offensively.

Of course, in Dimension Wall's case, we can only activate it when a monster attacks us. But, yes, your correct again. All that Dimension Wall asks for is you to "only activate this card when your opponent declares an attack with a monster." It says nothing about a monster being on your side of the field. In that case, your redirecting the whole hit.

Oddly enough, I was just addressing that very subject matter on another site DJ....my thoughts exactly...

I swear, that is genuine coincidence. I remember when we petitioned one forum to give trying our philosophy out, and they ended up creating separate section for rulings discussions. Which, I believe, is prospering. But I never really had hope for Pojo. Old forums are like old dogs and new tricks, somewhat accustomed to the way things have always been.
