Why doesn't creature swap target when spear cretin and the shallow grave do?

I know creature swap doesn't target because both players must select a monster to be switched... That's as far as my encyclopiada-like knowledge of game mechanics has gotten me...

I think that these are the kind of questions that can only be anwered with the same question. Because Creature Swap dosen't target.

I compare Creature Swap with Exchange. I has an alike behavior. The results won't be known until resolution. All we know is that some monsters on the field will have its control switched.

Creature Swap does not target because the monsters are selected at resolution of the Spell Card.

The cards effect does not tell the controller to "select 1 or 2 cards", it tells the controller that "each player will select a monster from their own side of the field" for the effect of Creature Swap.

Since you are not activating and THEN selecting one of your opponents monsters, as in a statement similar to this:

Select 1 of your opponents monsters. {<-- At this point it is targeting} Change control of the selected monster with 1 monster from your side of the field.

The situation calls for Creature Swap to be fully resolved and in the Graveyard before the monsters are selected for its effect, therefore, there is no "targeting" by a card effect, only the respective owner/controller.

That is correct...Creature Swap targets the players themselves, NOT the monsters specifically.

The Shallow Grave and Spear Cretin target the monsters themselves.

It is a bit odd... but hey... stranger things have happened.

Ok, allow me to re-word my question. I know that the reason for creature swap not targeting is because the monsters are selected at resolution and I already know why. My question is why isn't the shallow grave and spear cretin the same way?

Spear Cretin is in the Graveyard when you are targeting your monsters for its effect:

FLIP: After this card is flipped, when it is sent to the Graveyard, both you and your opponent select 1 monster from your respective Graveyards...

I dont see where the problem lies on this one.

The Shallow Grave directs both players to select a monster at "activation" since it's effect cannot be activated if either player does not have a monster in their Graveyard. If after this card has been activated, your opponent chains an effect that would remove the only monster from your or his Graveyard, the effect would still resolve since it was correct at activation.
