CDIP-EN017: Vanity Devil

CDIP-EN017: Vanity's Fiend

EDIT: OH my god. I posted this on a wrong section. Mods, PLEASE move this to the correct section which is Card Review and Tips section. I'm very sorry I did this. Thank you.

--------

Another review my me. And ah, we review the 1 card that IMO is actually VERY GOOD in this pack. (Other then Instant Fusion before the banning of TER. Japan just LOVED their 1x Instant Fusion with 1x TER in their Fusion decks for a bit of awhile. The only reason they didn't ran more was cause there wasn't more TERs in their fusion decks.)

Today, we get a Tribute monster that pretty much says NO to monsters. Like how Jinzo says NO to traps.

CDIP-EN017

Vanity's Fiend

Dark / Fiend / 6 /

2400ATK / 1200ATK

This card cannot be special summon. When this card is face-up on the field, monster(s) cannot be special summon.

-------------

Wow. For once, we got a VERY SHORT TEXT for a monster effect. And for something short, we got a good effect.

At first glance, you might go, "WTF, you cannot special summon this thing that's a level 6. Why the heck you run it?" Then again, why people run Monarchs if they have to be tribute summoned to kick in their effect. Sometimes, an effect can just destroy. And for my good sakes thank GOD this card cannot be special summoned. If it WAS, I would have to rate this card another 11/10. (Imagine a CotH/Premature/MonsterGate/Dasher/RftDD/etc. effect) And the only card I ever rated a card 11/10 so far was a Treeborn Frog. And when I rate a card 11/10, it means "BROKEN, PLEASE RESTRICT OR BAN THIS CARD?!" Lucky, the lack of special summon puts this card in the "balanced" level.

Now, the effect, why this card is out, NO SPECIAL SUMMONS. Now you might go, "Meh, just a special summon". But seriously, this YGO game and dueling have ALOT to do with all about summons, and ALOT of summons in one turn to go for aggro win. (Unless your playing alternative win strat, like burn/stall/mill/etc wheter s/t are more important then monsters) Especially now with Chaos being banned. (This card would have KICKED ASS against Chaos) If Jinzo put all the negative on Traps that made it 1 per deck, this puts all no to special summons, and lets actually LIST the stuff this card cancels out then to see just how evil and brutal this is.

Scapegoat
Cyber Dragon
Cyber-Stein
Treeborn Frog
All Recruiters (Tomato, Angel, Rat, Turtles, Pyramid, etc.)|
Apprentice Magician
Nimble Momonga
Giant Germ
Hydrogeddon
Last Will
Metamorphosis
Future Fusion/Dragon's Mirror/Overload Fusion/Power Bond/Poly/etc.
All Ritual Spell cards.
Premature Burial
Call of the Haunted
GK Spy
Goldd/Sillva
D Hero Dasher

etc. etc. etc.

Now, how many of then are being run on CC top tier Meta level of dueling right now, almost all of them in one form or another. Basically, after you build up your army of Monsters, summon this and pretty much say. "NO MORE MONSTER FOR YOU". It's like Last Warrior from Another Planet in a non-fusion Tribute Monster form. (Although not as deadly)

You might go, "well, Jowgen the Spiritualist can do the same thing, and it's a level 3" Well my friend, that weenie is just 200ATK. And with only 1300DEF, it's NOT gunna live long at ALL. This thing is 2400ATK. That's Monarch/Jinzo level. That means it WILL live for awhile and thus they need to do some positional change/steal or use some form of monster removal. Your foe will NOT gunna be taking this thing out by battle while in ATK position 95% of the time. (Only a Monarch/Jinzo suicide or Rush Recklessly with Cyber Dragon kicked in can help)

But this card isn't a stable or "God tier". The main prob, it cannot be special summoned. And it also doesn't give you immediate 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 1 advantage trade-off like the Monarch do. It's more like a Jinzo, where it's not immediate advantage, but on-field advantage where your foe will cower in fear in over long period of time. I mean, how many times did you try to attack directly to be shut down by scapegoat. Or like attack a face-down to get recruiters or some other form that just replaces by another monster. Or that stupid Treeborn Frog that makes it a 1 turn wall each blasted turn that you cannot go through. Or say they Cyber+Monarch tribute to totally change the shift of the control of the game. That's all GONE after this card being summoned.

But like I said, it's not an immediate advantage. And it's a TOTAL waste of a tribute if you tribute summon this mosnter just to get Saku/Mirror/Torrential/BTH/etc. So what kinda decks that can take advantage. IMO, swarms deck. (e.g. Hydrogeddon) Swarm decks got PLENTY of tribute fodders just lying around here and there to get tributed. So if you got 3x Hydrogeddon on the field, might as well tribute one for this one. But IMO, I think before you summon him, make sure you blast the s/t off the foe's field to make sure he lives. This card is monster advantage card, so you don't have to worry about a face-down monster unless it's a Sangan or Spirit Reaper. But you DO have to worry about s/t destroying this. So before you summon this, have a Heavy ready or CotH Jinzo IMO. Yeah, I mean, have 3x Hydrogeddon or some good field presence, bring Jinzo, tribute one fodder for Vanity Devil, and yeah, watch your foe cower in fear. The only monster they CAN play are just Exiled Force or DD family against Vanity Devil to counteract it. (And Newdoria or Night or Old Vindictive-like)

The only thing I fear is that it's DEF is just 1200. That might not matter, but it does against a Hydrogeddon decks. I mean, if they Enemy Controller it and then smack that, they can start their chain again. So yeah, protect his monster. (It won't matter much against Dark World since they usually don't run Enemy Controllers or the like) And like Jinzo, also fear Brain Control or Book of Moon as well.

Lastly, it's a 2400ATK Dark monster, i.e. it can be DDV. If they destroy it or try to steal it, might as well DDV it. That'll seal the deal of destroying more monsters from hand and drawing. (Yeah, all those "dead monsters" in their hand now all die.)

Staple, no. CC, likely so. Very good "tech card" that we might see here or there in main. And IMO, a very good sidedeck. (Hate Dark World, splash this along with Banisher and BAM, they fear you.) I expect this to come out in regionals and someform of Shounen Jump Championship like around December as tech.

In the end, I give this card

9.5 out of 10

I can't give it 10/10. That's a Cyber Dragon level. (Which is pretty much considered staple in multiples in most tournament level decks these days.) Really, my ranking of this is the highest I'll give that's below the "Staple" level. My rating of 10/10 is a "staple" or Cookie-cutter level card. (Monarch, Cyber Dragon, etc.) 11/10 is a broken card that needs to be 2 or 1 per deck. (Spirit Reaper, Treeborn Frog, Cyber-Stein.) 12/10 is either 1 per deck but usually a ban. (Heavy Storm, Mirror Force, etc.) and 13/10 is PURE BAN THIS THING 100%. (Raigeki, etc.)

lol~! Nice flash man. Fine, think what you will. You can alwasy Pot of Avarice him to add him to your deck for resummoning. (Assuming you got Frog in your graveyard for easy summon)

We'll see in due time how useful or useless it is. Maybe I'm wrong in my judging, but a 2400ATK monster that shuts down monsters is a good effect. For one thing, this dude is definately not hitting any of the "Restriction/semi-limit" list cause he cannot be special summoned.

I don't see the lack of SS to be a big deal. Dark Ruler Ha Des cannot be SS from the Graveyard, so unless you play Return he isn't coming back easily. Monster Reincarnation will also put Vanity Fiend back in your hand to reuse. As you say, people play Monarchs and their effects are useless unless they are Trib Summoned. 9.5 may be a bit high for the meta as we know it, but the meta is evolving and big changes are in the works with the new boosters. Especially with Burn from Chains effects that are forthcoming. With that added emphasis, this guy will be very playable. In the meantime, Brain Control, Enemy Controller, Soul Exchange, Mausoleum of the Emperor all make excellent support.

...no one uses "Dark Ruler Ha Des" unless it is a Fiend Deck, plus "Dark Ruler Ha Des" is way better than "Vanity´s Fiend", I mean 9.5 is way too much for this card, even Broken cards hardly can get that rate...

My rating is a bit odd. If the card's broken level, I rate it higher then a 10/10 (like I stated, a 11/10 or higher would be a broken level) 10/10 would be a Meta staple, and 9/10 would be a good card/deck theme/Meta techable/etc.

But yeah, just how many SS support stuff are there? Usually people just run two. (i.e. CotH, and Premature) And among those two, CotH is losing alot of popularity. I mean, people tribute for Monarch or Jinzo all day. (Makes sense, Monarchs give instant advantage and Jinzo, yeah, it's Jinzo, changes the flow) Vanity's Fiend doesn't give that much instant advantage as them, but still, if you got field advantage, might as well put a lock on monsters for the win.

But yeah, I do see your point that why 9.5 is too high. I'll think about this rating when the card actually comes out and if it sees play or not.

What about the recent abuse of Cyber-Stein and the resurgance of the fusions. It seems to have gotten a lot easier to bring them out nowadays. I see a lot of Cyber Twin/End, Chimeratech, and now the new Five Head Dragon. I see potential in this new 2400 monster.

The 2400ATK is a nice feature. Not much will take him down easily in battle. He can also duck Smashing Ground occasionally with only 1200DEF.
