D.D. Survivor TLM-EN021

Of all the cards in today's game, this has to be my favourite. Why? Well, here's the main reason:

If this face-up card on your side of the field is removed from play, this card is Special Summoned to the owner's side of the field during the End Phase.

D.D. monsters, you hate 'em or love 'em. In the beginning, when I attacked a face-down D. D. Warrior Lady (or D. D. Assailant), I thought to myself "Ugh, not again?" and usually see both monsters removed from play.
Then the TLM boosters came out and inside it was my rescue: D. D. Survivor.

When this card is removed, it comes back. Simply amazing. Now when I attack a face-down D. D. Warrior Lady or D. D. Assailant, I don't have to worry. Plus, it's a Dark monster (removable for Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning) and a Warrior (searchable by both Reinforcement of the Army and The Warrior Returning Alive), making it a great addition to Warrior decks. Plus, it can annoy your opponent ;).

The drawbacks: when it's in the grave and removed, it's gone forever (or at least untill the next game). Also, face-down and your opponent uses Nobleman of Crossout? Say bye-bye (tip: never play this card face-down).
What's that? You're playing Creature Swap, so you can give me your D. D. Assailant and I have to give you my only monster, D. D. Survivor? And now you're attacking?! Oh no, it won't come back now! (I hate to give my opponents tips, but I gotta be neutral)

D.D. monsters? I love 'em a lot and hate 'em just a little bit...

(please be gentle, it's my first review :D )

Well, this card was all set to be reviewed on July 23rd to close out Week 2 of Nationals Tech Week (by me, incidentally), but since it's
already out here I'll go ahead and throw in my 2 cents now.

Card Text: If this face-up card on your side of the field is removed from play, this card is Special Summoned to the owner's side of the field during the End Phase.

Rulings
  1. The effect of "D. D. Survivor" activates during the End Phase if "D. D. Survivor" is currently removed from play. It does NOT activate at the moment he is removed from play. You can chain to this effect.

  2. You can activate "Divine Wrath" against the effect of "D. D. Survivor" when it activates during the End Phase. In this case, "D. D. Survivor" is not actually Special Summoned. "D. D. Survivor" remains removed from play (its effect doesn't activate again).

  3. If "Skill Drain" is active when "D. D. Survivor" is removed from play, it is still Special Summoned because its effect activates during the End Phase while it is removed from play.

  4. If you have no open Monster Card Zones during your End Phase, and "D. D. Survivor" is currently removed from play, he is not Special Summoned.

  5. If "D. D. Survivor" is removed from play, then placed in the Graveyard with "Miracle Dig", he is not Special Summoned.

  6. If "D. D. Survivor" is removed from play with "Dimensionhole", and "D. D. Survivor" is Special Summoned by its effect, the effect of "Dimensionhole" ends (freeing up the "occupied" Monster Card Zone) even though the effect of "Dimensionhole" did not return "D. D. Survivor" to the field.

  7. If "D. D. Survivor" or "D. D. Scout Plane" is removed from play with "Interdimensional Matter Transporter", you can choose whether it is Special Summoned (with its effect) or returned to the field (with "Interdimensional Matter Transporter").
The Good:
- DARK is good for Chaos
- Warrior gives it all kinds of support
- 1800 ATK is great for a 4 star
- As mentioned, takes out D. D. Warrior Lady and D. D. Survivor which run rampant in today's meta
- Select this and an opponent's monster for Different Dimension Gate and this card comes back, leaving the opponent's monster in limbo
- Rule 6 and 7
- only a Rare
- If stranded in Removed from Play somehow, Dimension Fusion and Return from the Different Dimension bring it back. Plus it will come back again after being removed again with RFtDD

The Bad:
- Still succeptable to the standard monster removal (but then again, not much isn't)
- Rule 2
- The effect doesn't help you if he's in the Graveyard (Soul Release anyone?)

The Ugly:
- 200 DEF

So the good far outweighs the bad. This guy is abused in today's meta because of his DARK/Warrior stats, solid ATK score, and counters to D. D. Warrior Lady and D. D. Assailants and Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning. If you're not at least side decking this, have someone check your temperature.

Ratings: 4.4/5 all around

Also a point of interest, I believe that's Marauding Captain in the artwork. And he's back with a vengeance.

Hmmm, I was not aware of a schedule. Sorry if I messed things up.

I don't think the Strike Ninja combo will work, for it needs to be on the field and then removed from play in order for it to return. The Scout planes will work, however.

I was fortunate enough to pull one of these guys in a set of packs just the other day. I have a fiend deck that revolves around RFP and this little guy is going to be a gem. This will add extra abuse for my Soul Absorption/Soul Demolition combo. Sure it won't beef up my Gren Maju Da Eiza, but it will make for some wonderful life point gain, as well as thinning out my opponents graveyard for some D. D. Dynamite.

just remember his effect will only work when he is face up on the field and is removed from play.

so in graveyard it wont work, in hand it wont work, and in deck it wotn work.

Hmmm, well DOH! There goes that option....8^D Thanks for the heads up. Fiends don't like warriors all that much anyway, so its all good 8^D

Survivor+Banisher of the Light=much annoyance

Survivor(s)+Card of Sanctity=Massive card advantage

Survivor+Strike Ninja+Spirit Elimination=nearly impossible, but awfully cool when it does work

Survivor+massive amounts of D.D. madness on the opponent's side of the field, s is standerd in the current metagame=a pwnd opponent

Survivor+opponent's BLS=you better attack, or I'm comin' back...best be careful of those Sakuretsus...

Survivor is the BEST anti-aggro tech these days, simply becasue of all the Assailants, Warrior Ladies, and Bottomless Trap Holes running around. Not only that, it forces Envoy to attack instead of remove, which is often what you want it to do anyway so that you can burn it off with your Sakuretsu/Mirror Force/whatever. I think it's awesome, and you BETTER think it's awesome...or he will come after you himself...and do you really want something that laughs off Envoy coming to your house? Nu-uh.

On a side note...it does look like Marauding, but a YOUNGER Marauding. you ever notice that anyone who isn't a native of the Different Dimension comes back younger? Gogiga Gagagigo came back as Gigobyte, Marauding came back as D.D. Survivor, and Freed came back as Freed the Brave Wanderer...strange indeed...

No worries man. You did a good job with the review anyway.

And you're right... in my haste this morning I wasn't thinking clearly. Removing D. D. Survivor for Strike Ninja's effect won't bring him to the field in the end phase because he wasn't on the field to start with. Thanks for catching that.

He still fits well in a deck with Strike Ninja though (if you ask me at least) with them both being DARK/Warrior. Heck, just check out my Army of Darkness deck in the Advanced Format.

Bump, bump. Since today is the end of Nationals Tech Week 2, and D. D. Survivor is the card for today.... here it is again.

Feel free to post additional comments or post for the first time about it.
