had the question come up today at our local tournament.
player A successfully special summons Destiny Hero Dogma and then special summons lava golem on player B's side of the field.
when player B enters his/her next standby phase which monster's effect that does damage to life points would be first????? thanks

Actually it doesn't work that way in this case since the effect's are both controlled by different players.

So since Player B (which in this case should be the turn player), would put his mandatory effect's first on the chain (in this case, Lava Golem's effect which is mandatory). Then Player A would put his mandatory effects on the chain (in this case Dogma's effect which is also mandatory), so the chain would look something like this:

Chain Link 1: Lava Golem
Chain Link 2: Destiny Hero - Dogma
Be aware! These are PHASE effects, not simultaneous effects! SEGOC is NOT used here. Priority is used to resolve phase effects.

The Turn Player (Player B) has priority to choose first to resolve Lava Golem's effect or pass priority to NTP. If Priority is passed, NTP may choose to resolve Destiny Hero - Dogma's effect or pass priority back. If NTP passes priority back, the TP must now resolve a phase effect or in this case, the effect of Lava Golem first.

In any case, as long as the TP has > 1000 LP's, he/she would be wise to resolve Lava Golem's effect first.

They wouldn't form a chain, would they? Wouldn't they simply activate and resolve individually?
When you have effects that simultaneously activate and resolve at the same time, we use the chain to resolve the effects with the anachronym SEGOC = Simultaneous Effects Go On Chain to remind us.

In the example here, we have 2 effects that are triggered or activated at different times, but need to be resolved during the same phase. Phase effects are resolved using Priority with the Turn Player having priority first. If either player has multiple phase effects to resolve, they may choose the order of their resolution.

You are correct in that these effects don't form a chain and they resolve individually; however, an order to the resolution needs to be established, because it makes a difference in Life Points depending which effect resolves first. Priority is used to resolve Phase effects.

And in this case the TP would do better to resolve Dogma's effect first, halving the life points of the NTP and then resolving Lava Golem's effect to reduce the LP another 1000. If the TP resolved Golem's effect first, then the accumulation of both effects would result in less damage to the opponent. If the NTP had 3000 LP's left then the effect would resolve like this:

Dogma's effect resolving first:
3000 LP and then halved:
1500 LP left and then Golem's effect decreasing by 1000 LP
500 LP left at end of both effects resolving

Golem's effect resolving first:
3000 LP and decreased by 1000
2000 LP left and then Dogma's effect halving the LP
1000 LP left at end of both effects resolving

It's more advantageous to resolve Dogma's effect first. Causes more damage

Shoot, I was thinking about something else, it was rather late =P. Yeah, disregard the previous post.

It works similar to Ectplasmer and Brain Control. Man I need to get more sleep.
